Audi R8 V10 Roadster Spied In Final Testing On Nürburgring |
|

Those waiting for a drop-top version of Audi's R8 won't have to wait much longer. The car is set to debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September and it appears as though Audi is out doing some final testing - as these Nürburgring spy photos show.
In Frankfurt Audi is expected to debut the 525hp V10-powered version of the four-ringed exotic as well as a 420hp V8 version.
A soft top, and not a hard top, is the top-down route Audi has chosen. Not only will it help keep weight down (always a problem with Audis) but it is better for packaging and cost. Besides, every other Audi convertible has a rag top.
The only question remains, what will it be called? R8 Spyder? R8 Roadster? Or the R8 Convertible?

Audi Bringing R8 Roadster and Electric R8 to Frankfurt Auto Show |
|

According to two more than one reliable source, Audi is set to unveil the roadster version of its awesome R8 at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September. But that isn't the only R8 set to debut.
The R8 Roadster will be available in both V8 and V10 versions with 420 and 525 horsepower respectively.
A drop-top version of the R8 has been in the works for some time and rumors that Audi would build such a car emerged just shortly after the original V8-powered machine launched. Having a convertible version would not only allow the R8 to take on cars like the Porsche Carrera Cabriolet and 911 Turbo Cab, but it would also allow Audi to capitalize on a successful platform by building more (even higher priced R8s) but in a different class of vehicle so the car will retain its exclusivity.
The surprising bit of news is that Audi will be launching yet another version of the R8 - an electric version. This car will no doubt be a concept and will likely see the same fate as the R8 TDI. Still, it will be interesting to see what the Audi engineers can come up with.

Audi's New R8 Gets Run Out of Maranello: Video |
|

This is the latest installment in Audi's brilliant marketing campaign that mocks other car makers and positions the brand as an alternative to traditional luxury vehicles.
For the new 525hp 5.2-liter V-10-powered R8, the setting is Maranello, Italy - the home of Ferrari. When positioning itself as a luxury brand, Audi takes on the Germans (or even the Japanese), but when competing in the exotic car arena there is no place quite like Italy.
And in a move that is almost blasphemous, the R8 is painted bright red. Needless to say the Italians are not amused and promptly chase the German exotic out of town.

Audi Tuner PPI Reveals Completed R8 With 580hp |
|
May 05, 2009 - 9:29 AM - by Administrator
|
German Audi tuner PPI Design has released several versions of its R8 Razor GTR over the past 18 months and has now completed the project. The official unveiling happened at the Top Marques Monaco show and there really aren't many words for the exotic other than "impressive."
Thanks to a supercharger kit mated to the 4.2-liter V8, the R8's new output is 580hp at 7400 rpm and 443 ft-lbs of torque at 6200 rpm.
Weight has also been decreased significantly due in part to an all-new carbon fiber body - and a set of carbon/aluminum wheels. In total the PPI Razor GTR weights 551 lbs less than the standard R8 for a total curb weight of just 3,483 lbs. PPI claims the added power and light weight translate to a 0-62 mph sprint of 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 206 mph.

Audi R8 Roadster Rumors Resurface |
|
May 05, 2009 - 9:29 AM - by Administrator

The original V8-powered R8 had only been on the streets for a few days when rumors began to surface about a drop-top roadster version of the exotic Audi. Then Audi threw a curve ball with the 12-cylinder turbo-diesel R8 concept before unveiling the V10-powered monster.
Now that the V10 R8 is on the streets, those drop-top rumors have resurfaced.
The U.K. publication WhatCar? is claiming its sources inside Audi have confirmed a convertible version of the R8. More specifically, it will be a soft top.
If Audi is to build a convertible version of the R8, a soft-top is most likely for many reasons. For starters, as the R8 is mid-engined there really isn’t much room for a hard top. Also, we’ve seen Audi stick to soft tops, even on new models like the A5/S5, due, in part, to the fact that Audi’s are notoriously heavy and adding a complex mechanized hard-top would only add to that problem.
It isn’t clear of the convertible version will use the V8 or V10 powerplant but it is supposed to be in dealerships by 2011. If that is the case, Audi might use the Frankfurt Auto Show in September to give us a peek.
