How to beat the winter blues

We've been doing this for the past 7 years. Started out in a much smaller shop (track was about 20x30 feet, laps took 4 seconds). Moved into this place about four years ago. Didn't get any time in last winter, but by God, I was going to this year.

Our opening night of "The 2011 Season of 50 Night" - Happens every Thursday evening. Some guys get together and play poker, we get together and go in circles.

    Average physical age: 45
    Average Mental age: 14

    Fun on a scale of 1 to 10: 11

In general the only damage anyone sustains is a few bumps and bruises.

The concrete floor's been cleaned and mopped and then we spray a mist of orange soda (highest sugar content) on the floor and let it dry. Makes the surface nice and sticky. It starts out a bit slippy and then works in. Once worked in, we'll get 40 or so good laps - good enough to drag foot pegs all the way around the corners. Once it starts to go off, we'll stop for a while, respray and then go back at it.

There are a couple of rules:
No putting your buddy into the wall. It happens, but not intentionally.
If you knock over a cone, the call of "Cone Violation! Reverse direction!" (in a Cajun accent, for some reason, nobody can recall where this came from) and you turn around and you go after it in the other direction.

This is all about fun. Check your ego at the door, please.

It is nice to see a bunch of young guys out having fun. This looks safer than ice hockey.

Wow nice! I'd make it three laps and have the worst spins, just can't go round in a circle at all like that for too long.

How I used to handle weekend winter blues when skiing was out of the question:

Man do I miss ice racing, absolute blast. The first year I went out there were a few guys on bikes with homemade studded tires. I have some video I should pop up on youtube. The guys were fearless, easily doing 80mph on glare ice, leaning it over and ripping up our course. They still couldn't post times faster than an Audi 90q in the superstuds class though.

Too bad there are no frozen lakes in the SF Bay Area
