Volkswagen Pickup truck?

While out running around in the desert today I came across what I thought was a pair of Ford four door, short bed, pick up trucks. They looked pretty sleek and then I noticed the big, round VW badge on the grills of the trucks.

Has anyone seen, or even heard of, VW making a pickup truck? I know they did back in the 70's and/or 80's, but not since then.

I didn't get a good look at the license plates. They were Arizona issue, but I wasn't able to see if they were manufacturer plates or not. I've seen quite a few mfg plates over the years out here - lots of things get tested.

I get the feeling that these were getting put through the paces, as they were sitting at the base of the road that runs up Four Peaks (about 24 miles of twisty, sometimes fairly brutal road), with both drivers looking like they were busy going through notes or something of the such. I didn't manage to run across them at any other time.

Yea, that's very much like what I saw.

I don't recall the fender flares being black, but then again I wasn't paying very much attention and it didn't really dawn on me what I may have seen until I was on down the road from them.

Too bad I didn't catch them on my video cam - then again, maybe I should go watch some more footage...

I saw mention of a VW p/u concept in one of the car mags from Jan or Feb....maybe due in 2013/14?

Its the new VW Amarok pick up (built in Mexico )
It was supposed to be launched last year ,now due in the UK spring 2011 priced from £16,995 to £21,575 all Plus Vat

That wouldn't surprise me seeing them so close to the VW proving grounds. It's near Maricopa.
