Know someone who traded up from an S3 to an S5, it's having some work done so they gave him a S5 3.0TDI, he's really pissed as its got the same 0-60 time (nearly) and gives twice the consumption.
Overall he's not overly impressed with the S5

You're buying a car for your cleaning girl?

If the girl couldn't handle the stick well, do you think that she could she handle the performance during tricky situations![]()
I would suggest A5 2.0T S-Line. Same look as S5, but better economy. As for years, 2009 didn't have folding mirrors but otherwise they're all the same. 2010 (11?) was the first year for titan package if that's your thing...

i had an S5 before i upgraded to R8. there are minor details that are different in each year, i had a 2009 S5 which had the LED tail lights, which IMHO looked alot better than the tail lights in ealier years. Also, if your looking for sat nav, 2009 model onwards had the 3g MMI with hard disk drive etc.
If you're thinking about kids, look at the A4 or A6 wagon to haul stuff around in. Had both and they handle like the sedans and look pretty good.

i read in some blogosphere of Audi afficionados many months ago that quite a lot were complaining of something buggy in the M/T compared to the A/T of early S5 models...otherwise, I'm out of any other details (how about waiting for the RS5 btw?)

The S5 is very nose heavy and feels bulky. Weighs 300 lbs more than an A5 and it's all under the hood. She would like an A5 much better. Also the S5 has 19" tires which feel jittery to me while the A5 with 18 inch tires is much more comfortable
I agree with what was said above re stick and general driving ability, and unless she has a strong inclination for powerful cars, just get a normal one, it's quieter, softer ride and probably more satisfying driving experience for someone who doesn't need or want power.
