Re: Formula One Broadcast Schedule for USA

    And so the season starts!!!

    Australian Grand Prix

    venue: Albert park, melbourne
    date: Sunday 27 march
    lap length: 3.295 miles
    race laps: 58
    2010 winner: Jenson button (mclaren)
    first grand prix: 1996
fascinating fact: The race returned to melbourne in 1996 when martin brundle was involved in a terrifying crash on the first lap, which split his jordan car in two. Amazingly, the british driver was able to run back to the pits to collect the spare car for the restart - only to spin off at the same corner on the first lap.

Re: Formula One Broadcast Schedule for USA

Thank you Bodhii for posting this up. I've not been paying attention and knew that the 2011 F1 season was near to starting, but didn't realize it was this weekend. DVR is set and ready.

This should be an interesting season. It's a bummer that Kubica's not going to be on board this year (last that I heard) - he needs to be in one of the top three cars (Ferrari, Red-Bull, McLaren) and he'd be a contender.

Totally new cars this year, right?

Re: Formula One Broadcast Schedule for USA

    Yes,.. new cars!
    Here are the changes:
One of the most important rules is the reinstatement of the 107% qualifying speed rule. It stipulates that a driver who does not lap within 107% of the pole position time during the hour-long qualifying session the day before the race will not be eligible to compete in the race, subject to the discretion of the stewards.

This is important as the poorer teams may be dangerously slow in comparison to the wealthier teams, as we saw at Valencia last year when Red Bull's Mark Webber accidentally drove over the top of a much slower Lotus race car because their speeds were so drastically different.

Re: Formula One Broadcast Schedule for USA

That's an impressive list of new stuff.

I wasn't aware of about half of it - additional tethers, no F-duct, wheel mods and a couple of the other things.

Interesting on the wheels and aero. I also like that they're actually going to have functional mirrors. I recall a few of the drivers complaining about not having useable mirrors on the past chassis.

I remember hearing about the upgraded rear crash structure and that KERS was coming back - do you know what teams will be running it?

As much as I'm afraid it's going to knock out a few of the newbie teams, it's good to see the 107% rule back. That really did help with lappers and the safety aspect of speed differential.

That was a fun race to watch. The new stuff has made some differences - tires are interesting.

Killer to see Petrov on the box. As everyone else said, I wonder how Kubica would have done. Renault/Lotus may be a force this year, which would be a nice thing to see.

Looks like five teams have a great shot - RB, McLaren, Ferrari, Renault and MB.

Can't count out Force India either - it appears that they've finally started to hit stride now that they have a competitive drive train. They've been around long enough to and I think have paid their dues as "the new guys".

Re: Formula One Broadcast Schedule for USA

Here is a quote from last year that I made elsewhere about Petrov.

    07-13-2010[
I think Petrov represents a significant new talent for F1 and Renault. Of course the Russian rookie driver is full of DNF's, but he has also completely out dueled Alonso and Schumacher on a few very exciting occasions, and made Hamilton stretch his limits. Petrov is a F1 rookie who regularly shows considerable talents and even moments of brilliance along with a raw enthusiasm that completely ignores the current F1 hierarchy. And he seems to bring some serious Russian money! Renault should give him one more year and then evaluate what they have. His high driving energy and refusal to be bettered by his 'betters', may be the start of a real winner
Even a completely broken clock will have the correct time twice a day. Da?

Too bad that the new adjustable rear wing, when combined with the KERS, doesn't make for a much easier and clean overtaking.
