And it could be yours for the price of two R8 Spyders so long as you can wait a few years. I'm happy to see that even the vaunted F-car doesn't have a glass engine lid!

    Re: 458 Spider

Since we're talking about the exquisite new 458, for those who may not have seen this fascinating video, here's an amazing tour of the 458 engine plant where they see "how fast can I (a reporter) build one?" Truly amazing automation while preserving a "hands on" touch. I'm sure Audi's Hungarian engine plant is equally amazing.

However, quite a difference from the old days. Can't locate the video, but somewhere there's an old film of the Maserati engine plant where ONE mechanic (with a boy helper) built ONE V8 engine in ONE day, and, after the test bed run, signed off on the individual engine as being his personal product and meeting his satisfaction. Probably cost as much as a whole 458 Italia to build an engine like that today.

I never thought the day would come when I described a retracting roof movement as sublime but here we are. Poetry in motion.

That said, it would break the hearts of the production line engineers to know that I was sitting watching the roof go up and down all day in the tropical swamps rather than thrashing the 458 through the crystal air of the Italian Alps.

I think that the 360, 430, and now 458 spiders are some of the sexiest cars ever built. Even if you are not a Ferrari fan for whatever reason, I can't imagine anyone saying that this car is anything but gorgeous.
