In relation to my latest thread about my dealer, I figured this would be something to see.

Re: Service at local dealer :-/

My local R8Tech is a great guy. As in RS4Cab's case, he's not a kid. I've asked him to drive both my R8 and my ZR1. He drives both of them with skill and respect. I trust him with my cars.

I don't think anyone is suggesting all dealerships have this problem, but I think it's naive to think this is a rarity (other than them being stupid enough to have posted a video on youtube).

NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING done these days is immune from appearing on U-tube. You always have to remember that EVERY human being is carrying a video camera now, and remote hidden video cams are EVERYWHERE!

This is both good and bad----in this 1M case, GOOD---but it is now a fact of life!
The amazing thing is that so many people don't recognize the power and effect of what they've recorded....and POSTED!, until the reaction sets in

just wait until the video face recognition technology kicks in and all those videos posted over the last few years can be searched that way...

given the way things never go away when they're posted to the net, we've a generation going to grow up where anyone can view how they behaved when they were younger and make decisions based on that.

This is one of those car stories that will be talked about forever.

    Great discussion in business ethics.

In my opinion - Since it was known that the video existed and was an ongoing discussion on a BMW forum, they should have disclosed it during negotiations.

I don't think it would make the car worth any less and things would have been fine.

I think the new owner should gladly accept the 2K, make amends with the management and enjoy the red carpet treatment through the length of ownership.

Seriously, the R8's go through much worse right off the assembly line.

Buying new carries a premium (in this case a premium over list) and part of that is down to the expectation of how the car will have been treated prior to taking ownership. I don't think it's fair to dictate the value that others "should" attach to each specific element of that.

Yes, I agree with you. What I find difficult to understand is why it's just about the money he paid for the car. If it was about the negligence, then he should have asked to return the car and find another. Instead he is going to battle with the dealership and burn that bridge.

What i meant by the R8 taking "more abuse" can be seen in the Discovery Channel's Ultimate Factories show on the Audi R8. It's split up into four parts on youtube.

Now granted these aren't the average joe having a chuckle of a good time. They are trained in a controlled environment. I guess its not really related to this since BMW M-Cars have a "break in" procedure for the first 1200 miles.

there are 2 issues at play to my mind:

    1) principle: it's a bit like finding the dealer took a crap in your new car, cleaned it up and handed it over as pristine with a knowing smile on their face.

    2) potential for mechanical issues caused by the abuse during the run-in period.

Do you mean the nat geo megafactories show? I saw that and enjoyed it, but don't recall thinking the cars were ragged to any degree other than the engine testing which was in a very controlled environment and part of the manufacturer prescribed process.

as you said, bmw prescribe a run-in period for the car that the techs clearly ignored for the purpose of self-gratification.

I think another big issue here is...... Not knowing if the car was even properly warmed up before thrashing on it as they did.
