I do like the SLK and when it has AMG power it's an impressive motor ... as you can testify it's a fair bit quicker of the line than an M3 ... and would even beat an RS4 of the line by 2 or 3 tenths ... but surely the most enjoyable part of driving is being able to enjoy the twisty bits of road as much as you enjoy pulling away from the lights
    Gone but not forgotten ...
VW Golf V6 4motion (does just what it says on the tin)
Vauxhall Lotus Carlton (a beast of a motorway cruiser)
Honda NSX, manual JDM (a beauty to drive anywhere)
Audi RS4, B7 saloon (awesome on any road - or track)

I'll be honest--I had the good fortune to be able to purchase the AMG version of the AMG, but I don't have the good fortune to replace one if I crack it up on a curve. I rarely drive it to the point where the tail breaks loose. I do love the fact that it has very little body roll in the twistys, though. The steering is really pretty neutral, and the auto transmission is a better driver than I am. I have never lost a race, and I have dusted a few M3s. I've never had the car on a track. The paddle shifters are buttons, and they are eaisier to bump into, which occaisionally leads to high-revving bad surprises. The paddles in the A3 are less accident prone.

Since the R8 is rocking the RS4 engine--it will sound incredible--the RS4 has really mechanical rasp--like a drag racing rig. The SLK has a lower tone and sounds like an old school American muscle car.

I do love the Audi line--I had a 2001 TT 225 HP--next and A4, now the AllRoad and the A3 3.2l. I guess I'll have to drive the R8--it would be nice if Audi offered an incentive to loyal customers.

Also, I believe that '06 is the last model year for which Audi offers free scheduled maintenance. That bums me out--I loved the free oil changes.
