Diesel powered Audi R8 in the works?

The latest reports surfacing suggest that Audi's new supercar is scheduled for oiloplasty. That's right, the R8 is getting a diesel. Backing up these reports are earlier ones that suggested a Lamborghini Gallardo test mule (on which the R8 is based) with what sounded like a diesel was heard driving around Sant'Agata Bolognese.

Ingolstadt seems to be on a quest to dominate the world with diesel power. The R10 race car put Audi on the map as the first manufacturer to compete for overall victory at the 24 hours of Le Mans with a diesel – and the R10 has been cleaning house in competition ever since.

Audi has yet to confirm the reports, which suggest that the diesel in question will be a 6-liter V12 TDi twin-turbo-diesel with output over 500 horsepower – more than the current gasoline V8 produces – and even more impressive torque figures.

If the R8 does indeed get a high-performance diesel, Audi will cause us to continue questioning our assumptions about the performance of oil-burners.

R8 414bhp V8 Petrol ... as soon as you can get your hands on one ...
R8 500bhp+ V12 TDi ... as soon as you can get your hands on one if the V8 R8 is not fast enough for you ... or you want better fuel consumption figures ...

reports in the uk press say the Q7 v12tdi will do 160mph and 0 to 60 in about 5.5 to 6.0 seconds ,not to bad for 2 and 1/2 tons SUV
just think what the engine will do in the R8 with the reduced weight ?

0-60 sub 4.0?
180+?
torque ?
have a guess ?

I've not forgotten it ... but I suspect the V12 TDi might be just as appealing as the V10 powerplant ... whicvh although it has found a home in the Gallardo ... was actually designed by Audi ... or so I have been led to believe by an Audi person ...

I would wager heavily that the V12 TDI would also be much more "modifiable" and "reliable" in the long term. The potential of that engine, nearly limitless... where as, modifying the V10 would probably yield minimal gains.

Given my choice, I'd have to go with the diesel as well... but there is no replacement for the sound of the V10

The diesel would be amazing, and to be honest they know the one thing about a sportscar is it has to sound right, i dont think they will let the R8 diesel sound like a tractor, and that tourque will be through the roof!

One oil burner for me please Mr Audi sir.
