    OK, so somebody out there with a 2010 v10 and a manual, help me out here!

    I did think that all 2010 v10s were "AN" in places 4 & 5, but maybe that "D" in place 4 is for the manual tranny, and the "A" for R-tronic????

    My data sample at the point that I posted that "VIN decoder" post was limited to R-tronic v10s and manual v8s (a couple of each), now that I think about it!!

    So maybe I've missed something. Also, then, 2010 v8s with R-tronic perhaps are "A" in place 4....I know manuals are "D" because I've got one (WUADUAFGxAN...... mine goes).

    This, btw, is how I "decode" vins...process of trial (and obviously error) learning from comparing what cars have to what vins are. The Bentley manual has an "official" decoder for '08 and '09 cars but it's totally non helpful for figuring out 2010s!

    R84ME yeah that shirt matches the car real well. Still working on it, have to pull some money out of the stock market and have not pulled the trigger on that yet.

    HMP10 My S5 was ordered as a 2008 and got delayed and Audi built it as an 2009 so I think your dealer is wrong on that one.

    ultimately, whether it's a '10 or an '11 will be determined by the VIN, not by when it was started or finished

    having said that, they seem to pretty much use June 1 as a cut off for the "START build" date for the new model year....there were a few v10s built in May '09 and they had '09 VINs (we had someone from Britain report that he had one on here last year)

    once "started", I suppose they're not going to change the VIN if completion is held over past June 1....since "completion" involves a lot of checking and testing that could, one imagines, hold up a particular car

    According to my dealer, the model year can change if an order is accepted in one model year but built later. However, he said that once a production allocation is assigned, the model year is frozen for that car, regardless of the actual build date.

    Given that MotherTrucker and I both have cars that were assigned production dates during the 2010 run and have retained the 2010 designation despite delayed build dates, that makes sense.

    once a production allocation is assigned, the model year is frozen for that car
    and that's because "assigned" means assigned to production, the first step of which is to attach a VIN#, since from that point forward, everything in the way of scheduling and sourcing is referenced to that VIN#(and its attached spec list)......and it's the VIN# which determines the "model year"......we're just saying the same thing in different ways;

    since we've been told that "they start building 20--s on June 1st," by several sources on this forum, I suspect they actually start assigning the next model year's VINs well back in May; in my case, I believe my dealer supplied printout said "assigned to production" on about 15 May with a start date of about 20 June;

    I had actually written my order about the last week of April; at that time, my dealer was saying this order would be assinged a 2010 model year; as it turned out, my car was the 551st 2010 built (at 25/day, that would be about 22 working days into the new model year, which jibes with the fact that mine was started later than June 20;

    bottom line is, when it's assigned to production, that's when you should have a VIN (takes a while to get it though) and that VIN will tell you what model year you're going to get; so let us know when your VIN comes through
