I need something so that I can read error codes from the car without having to take it to the dealer. Which/what will I need and where can I buy it?
Thanks

VCDS from Ross-Tech is basically the only game in town. Link is directly to the kit we use and recommend.

Rich is correct - the Vag-Com Diagnostic System is the most accessible and capable solution I'm aware of for Volkswagen/Audi.
It is also possible to reset the MIL (malfunction indicator light, also known as CEL - check engine light) with any of the simple OBD-II scan tools available at the auto parts store or online. While these tools can also read the error codes and show them to you, most won't be able to interpret the extended diagnostic codes which are customized by each individual automobile manufacturer.
Also, the generic tools won't be able to change the coding of the modules like you can with the Vag-Com. But then, depending on what you are attempting to do, this might be a good thing!![]()

Another way to do it is to disconnect the battery (just the positive end is fine) for at least 30 seconds. You will find the windows auto function doesn't work afterward. No worry, it requires a manual rolling up and down to recarlibrate itself before the auto function kicking in again.
I was always told to disconnect the negative cable FIRST.

Yes Harrison, it's safer that way but if you want a quick reset, disconnecting just the positive cable is okay. To be 100% by the book then, negative, then positive. And for connecting the bacttery, I normally do the oppositive (postive then negative)
Always connect positive lead first then negative.
The ground lead should be the last thing that's connected, otherwise it's really easy to pull a nice spark off of your tool when you accidentally ground it while tightening down the terminal bolt.

if your just resetting the ecu then unplugging the negative should be fine
