VF-Supercharger. Is 5 days of track abuse too much?

5 Days of track abuse. What ?

Could anyone on this forum quite possibly put their R8 through back to back track days ? or drive their car to its limits?

Yes. There is one such man, and he will likely chime in before he takes his VF supercharged R8 to its next track session.

Until then, here are some pictures of him burning through his Toyo R888 tires around Spring Mountain (NV) and Infineon Raceway (CA).

18 Oct 2009 Spring Mountain Racetrack (Parhump)

Cooling off in between 4 track sessions per day! Hanging out with VF supercharged RS4. Notice the techs sitting around with nothing to do.

After a day and a half of redlining around the track, the owner was quite satifsfied and asked for some alterations to the software. The latest OEM update Ver100 from Audi had a gradual ramp up which he did not like when coming out of a corner. Our software developer GIAC adjusted the software to make it more aggressive by allowing the throttle to open to 100% from as low as 1500 rpm with the supercharger.

From a product developers perspective, successful track testing is the ultimate feather in ones cap. But to top it, there is something further...

That is, more track testing!! The owner of the R8 was not content with the odd occassional track session and being a trunk junkie he started looking for his next fix. After leaving his carbon footprint in Southern California he quickly found his way 3rd gearing around Napa Valley going through the vineyards and ended up at Infineon Raceway!

    04 Nov 2009

As he was on his own, we were not able to get any action shots. It is possible the owner may have picked up some of the resident photographers shots of him on the track. We do have video and will post up part 2 of of our 3 part series.

Did #222 have so much power he damaged his car? My car has become less worldly and quite frankly, a bit Hyper. Just what I am looking for. MAYBE a blue anodized V.F. will wind up on my Jet Blue! I'd really like to know how Bodhiis' S.C. turned out? I will wait a bit and let you guys sort all the issues out.

Re: VF-Supercharger. Is 5 days of track abuse too much?

Hey all. First, I want to apologize for my prolonged absence. We have indeed finished up with the fine tuning of the VF-Engineering supercharger. The 222 car is my own personal car, and I have just finished putting it thru some very serious engine and performance Hell. All I can say is that the Audi R8 4.2L, wedded with the VF-Engineering superchager, becomes a most complete, and perfect, hi performance supercar.

When I track a car, I drive it like I am being payed to maximize everything on that car. I do not drive half or 3/4 speed. I drive always in the fastest groups and I am always one the faster within those groups. At both Infineon and at Thunderhill, I ran laps of under 2 min. At both of these tracks, these are track times possible for only for the real elite supercars and full race cars. And after these long track days, I pushed the car even harder and harder, for many more days up thru northern Cal's US 101 Ukia to Eureka, and Cal state hiways 299 & 36 at speeds often over 120 mph. ( I have driven everywhere in Europe, and most good roads in the USA including the Tail of the Dragon. NOTHING compares to these beautiful winding, Northern Cal redwood forest mountain hiways for long, sustained, full excitment hi performance driving. ) For all of these difficult motorsport trials, my car has been completely stock, except for yellow Pagid race pads, the VF supercharger, R888 tires.. and three weeks ago my Stassis exhaust was added onto the car for the last few road and track tests. What a most perfect sound when you combine this Stassis exhaust system to the VF supercharger!

I wanted to push the limits of this new superchager system, and see for myself its complete reliability. I wanted to find out NOW the real truth about the VF supercharger during a time when I am actively LOOKING for, and anticipating problems. I do NOT want to find the problems when I am LEAST prepared for them.

This VF supercharger system is indeed wonderful. I can't image my R8 now without it. Such amazing sound and power! Everything came through with flying colors, despite everything I could throw at it. Great job!!

Great assessment, hope it does as well in the long run. Probably not for the faint of heart with smog or warranty concerns but it's great to have this option at a more " reasonable" price point.

    1) I'd love to see the s/c in the powdercoated, is there one done up yet?

    2) What octane gas is used?

    3) Do you or will you have a tune available that will allow the car to pass an emissions test (car has to pass a tailpipe reader every 2 yrs here), I'd hate to have to remove the s/c just for a test.

    4) what sort of compression ratios are you hitting? I'm a little worried with the number of cars lately that have had engines grenade (not that compression was the cause, but the ratio is pretty high to begin with)

    Would love to do it..but

A few engines popping pistons around on forums at the moment .Shame Audi didn't install forged pistons in this motor like the conrods.

Not a case of the glass half empty...just possibly a very expensive drink with a mod of this sort.I do speak from personal experince with piston failure.

The high revving 4.2 FSI engines are built with Mahle Forged Pistons according to all the Audi Technical and Tech educational manuals.

3-4 failed stock engines is a relatively low number and not abnormal for a high performance engine. This is not an Audi only thing, either! BMW, VW and Porsche engines also have a history.

Forged alum. seems to be the favorite amongst racers.Untill something better comes.

I found an interesting FAQ on the Evolution Motorsports web site regarding aftermarket parts voiding your warranty. http://www.evoms.com/public/support_warranty.asp

Applying this logic to a supercharger, technically, the only part that should be at issue is the OEM intake manifold? I suppose you could spend a lot of time & money arguing with Audi that the supercharger & ECU flash did not bring about your piston failure but since Audi has more of both, I'm sure they would win this debate.
