    Exclamation IMPORTANT Brake disc malfunction

I recently heard (on the official R8 forum ) that the front left brake disc is the same as the front right.
These are ventilated discs with rotors to blow air through the disc.
The rotors in the left disc turn in the wrong way and so the disc isn't cooled off.
This is unsafe and causes rapid failure of the brake disc.
Apparently they don't even have the correct part (it was too expensive to make different brake discs (quote from AUDI official)).
This is highly disturbing and I would like to hear if anybody heard of the same problem in the USA. (check your brakes)

so why isn't the forum full of people complaining about their rapid brake disc failure?

I'd be surprised if people trusted you enough to open pdf's which are notorious payload carriers. maybe try uploading as jpeg's.

Just check your own brakes to see for yourself.

I think the forums aren't full of it because most people just have their brakes replaced when they fail and they don't question the quality of the R8 brakes.
Also, most people drive their R8 in a cautious way and don't go on track days or don't drive the car every day.

This is a technical explanation of how curved-vane vented brake rotors should work:

Which direction should the discs rotate?
It is a popular misconception that the slots or drillings in a disc determine the direction of rotation. In truth, for an internally vented disc, the geometry of the vanes dictates the direction of rotation. There are three vane types in use:

    •Straight
•Pillar vane (comprised of many small posts)
    •Curved vane
The first two vane types are non-directional, and can be used on either side of the vehicle. The curved vane disc, however, is directional. A curved vane disc must be installed with the vanes running back from the inside to outside diameters in the direction of rotation. Please see figure. Orienting the disc in the manner creates a centrifugal pump. The rotation of the disc causes air to be pumped from the center of the disc, through the vanes, and out through the outside diameter of the disc. This greatly enhances the disc's ability to dissipate heat.

If I remember correctly all Mercedes AMG cars have this same issue. I think MB also used cost as the excuse.

They should at least inform you when you by a new R8 that this might be an issue, especially if you want to take your car on racing trackts (after all it is a "racing car")

I attach a printout of the AUDI website with their proud description of the vented brakes. (this is misleeding advertisement)

Question Re: IMPORTANT Brake disc malfunction

Ofabre...don't be such a worry wart !! Did you notice that the arrows on the rotors show installment can be either side????? I race my R 8 and did the service of taking temperature readings on both sides of car to verify whether one side gets hotter than the other. What do you think I discovered??????? SAME TEMPS on both front rotors. Just what do you plan on doing with your car ?? So far on this forum, there have been no intentional misleadings --By Audi OR the forum members. You seem a newbie...but not for long if you keep hanging out. Welcome, my new freind. I enjoy your type of humor. It will be politically correct humor, and soon. \"/

    Re: IMPORTANT Brake disc malfunction

    Thanks for this reassuring info.
None the less the curved blades do turn in the wrong direction on the left side.
If it is all the same, then why do other brake manufacturers have separate left and right discs?

I believe this matter about the misdirection of the cross-drill pattern came-up either late last year or early this year.

The fact and a long story short, the cross-drills is to "COOL' . Yes, it's that 'COOL' look.

Harrison, thanks to finally dispel that myth through your temperature readings ...

    Be 'COOL'

    Best regards,
    Ritz
