    Question Audi R8 Tires/Rims V8 vs V10

I had one of the first '08 R8's in Dallas when they first came out. I just traded it for a V10 Spyder.

My '08 only had 10k miles on it and I went through 2 full sets of tires but I never had a blow out, just wear and tear.

In the first week in my V10, I hit a pothole (not a very bad one honestly) and it blew my tire. (P-Zero on V10 Michelin's on V8)

I have a friend who has a V10 coupe and he has had issues with blowouts also.

I am wondering if it is just bad luck or something to do with the suspensions, rims or tires on the V10 that this may be more common.

On a separate note, I did pay $1450 for the wheel protection program that they offered for wheel and tire protection. A new P-Zero is $430.

    Any thoughts?

You would assume from a safety aspect that both V8 and V10 are engineered the same in regards to risk from a Tyre blowout.

These cars are designed to travel at 300kmh

What type of rims do you have fitted..5 spoke or 10 Y spoke and is your friends the same as yours.

In saying that the V10 suspension is a bit firmer so maybe does not have as much give or absorption on said hole?

Wow, you went through TWO sets of tires in 10K miles! I have 15K on my original set of tires. Also, I have four track days on my original set of tires. I expect to get new rubber in the spring.

I didn't think I drove my car very hard, but if you got 15k miles out of original set, then I guess I was.

I had the original rims on the standard V8 (the 5 spoke) and the original rims on the V10 (the Y-shaped spokes) as does my friend with the V10 coupe.

I am thinking that perhaps Pirelli has weaker sidewalls then Michelin's perhaps...or just dumb luck.

Sure wish Dallas would fix the streets. The pothole is still there, and on a major intersection. (Turning North onto Plano Parkway from Parker Rd.)

My friend still has the original tires on his '06 Lambo Gallardo. (Same tires as the R8) has only 10K miles. No wonder I can keep up with him since I always have fresh slicks on my car. The tires heat cycle so many times that they actually harden up, and don't really heat up to a killer grip anymore. (when they are OLD).

Everyone always bashes on the Pirelli's, but I happen to love them. I put them on all my cars and have never had any problems. Had them on my Range Rover, my CL63, and now my R8. I am guessing it is just bad luck that you hit the pot hole and had a blow out. Honestly, if you hit a pot hole at the right angle with any tire, you are going to have a blow out. On a side note, I am overly cautious with my R8 (I have been this way with all my cars) and avoid everything in the road.

That could be true, since I was making a 90 degree right turn and the left front hit the hole...it would be bearing more weight. I never saw it since I was 15 feet behind another car on a right angle turn. Never had a chance to see it.

Didn't mean to bash Pirelli, just read other posts to the same.

Did anyone else get the tire protection on their purchase? I did it on the original and never had a chance to use it. But on this one I guess I got a third of it back in the first week. And since my buddy told me he has ruined 2 rims already, I was thinking it a wise investment.

Yeah. That definitely makes sense. And no worries man. To each his own. I'm just giving my opinion. I have nothing bad to say about Pirelli. Does the tire protection cover nails? I think it is a wise investment. At least it gives you peace of mind.

It covers wheels and tires...so the rims were my major concern. It covers everything except curbs. So if you hit a curb, just say it was a pothole.
