    Ceramic Brakes

    two questions:

my first one would be ...is it possible to order the ceramic brakes on a new v10 spider, since u can't see this option online!!??!!

and second if u get them aftermarket, there is often spoken from a different brake booster, my question what's the difference and is it really needed??
    thanks!!

    The ceramic booster is deeper.

I upgraded my R8 to ceramic. I don't know if it's really needed - my feeling is better with the right booster.

The ABS-ECU has to be reprogramed, too.

    Re: Ceramic Brakes

I had to do no reprogramming of the system at all.

The change over is pretty straight forward. The brake booster is a different part number than the regular booster.

I LOVE the carbon/ceramic brakes. I abused the snot out of them over the past week at Road America and NEVER had any hit of fade - they just get better and better as they get hot.

The only issue is that now, after about 450 miles of track use, they're squeaking fairly badly on the street.

    Re: Ceramic Brakes

I had that same issue on my porsche after a track event ..sounds like a race car, under heat there is no squeaking

so you changed out the brake booster??

I saw on the vag com that u can choose ceramics on the abs unit ..so i'm assuming that would be the change...

    Re: Ceramic Brakes

The booster should be changed with the fitment of the ceramic brakes as they are matched components. You may end up with an extremely touchy pedal or vice versa, not certain as I have never seen someone fit them without the proper booster.

The US cars should now be able to order ceramic brakes as a $9.9k option, however I'm not certain if there are any restrictions for spyder or coupe, but I can't see why. Speak to a dealership and see what they can spec out for you.

If you can't get them I can always assist in getting you a full genuine system as I did for Kfab.

Kfab- Glad to hear the brakes are working well on track! Your extra front pads actually just shipped today and look for an email with tracking. As for squeals, there are some great rubber stick on shims that I use on all my cars that I can point you to if interested. They don't last at track temps, but they do well on street holding up and eliminating most noise.

    Cheers!

    Re: Ceramic Brakes

I wonder what the difference between the two boosters is. The only physical difference (besides the part number sticker) is that the 2011's booster is not painted black. The 2009 that I originally installed them in did have a black booster - and the ceramic booster is painted black.

More touchy? Wow - that would make street driving a comical experience, as anyone that drives the car for the first time tends to bounce their nose off the steering wheel - they grab exceptionally well.

It takes a few miles under the foot to get the initial modulation down pat for street driving. Once you're used to it, it's not an issue (and fun to ride in the passenger seat so you can laugh at the person driving as they come to a stop).
