WINTER PKG advice: New member, longtime E46Fanatic and E92 member

    Gents (and potentially ladies):

Apologies if this is the wrong thread, but I am trading in the keys on my second M3 and picking up a V8 R8 tomorrow. Since I live in Toronto, I need to figure out a winter solution. My dealer is giving me shocking options in the $7k+ tax range, but after perusing some threads here it appears there may be after market, cobbled-together package options that will get me through a few months in Toronto. Any advice or direction is appreciated. I work for a US company so it does not need to be a Canadian-only solution.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

    James

    Tdot represent!

You can pick up a used set of 911 winters on kijiji. Search "295" (tire width) in the automotive section and you will likely find some sotto zero's for sale. Swap em out for the summers and your good to go for a couple of months. Find yourself a summer wheel tire package. A bunch of members (Guod) are selling wheel tire combos. Or, you can upgrade and get 20" forged wheels. I have a friend selling them at cost. Build time is 5 weeks.

Alternatively, you can check out tirerack.com and purchase brand new Blizzaks lm60's for about $1500 shipped.

Look in the tire and wheel forum, there are a number of threads about winter tires.

Thanks for the great tip on searching Porsche tires! Got a set of barely used Sotto 240s off Kijiji locally for $900. R8 delivery Tuesday.

(fingers crossed). R8 dealer specified Pirelli Winter 240 SottoZero II:

    FRONTS: 235/35R19 87V (N1)
    REARS: 295/30R19 XL 100V (N1)

    I bought....from a C4S owner...19" Pirelli Sottozero Winter 240 series. "V" rated.

    front 235/35 R19
    rear 295/30 R19

Hope they fit, not a tire expert but the SEEM to be the same thing!

Sounds fine, however one thing to keep in mind when buying either used or older (unused) winter rubber compounds stiffen with age and performance (grip) can be compromised.

Look at the date before buying the rubber and definitely stay away from old and barely used rubber. 2-3 years old should be roughly your max considering that you'll be driving it for 2-3 season.
