    R8/Other sports cars depreciation

Hello all. This is my first post to r8talk. I'm a member over at 6speed and currently drive a 997 carrera. I have been searching over the last week to get into a used r8 after over 4 years of porsche ownership. What I have noticed in researching this vehicle is that it enjoys very liitle depreciation in relation to other vehicles. The caveat however is that most cars have very limited miles as I guess it is primarially driven as a weekend car and not as a daily.

How do R8's price if miles are high? I intend to buy a relatively low mileage car but intend to use it as my daily driver (over 12,000 miles anually). I know when I go to sell or trade 3 years down, other R8's will have signicantly lower miles. For conversations sake, most cars depreciate roughly 50% in about 3 years. Will an R8's depreciation be similar, greater, less considering it will be driven roughly 12,000 miles a year? I guess the same dillemna is valid for other supercars (Ferrari, Lamborghini, ect.). Also is it better to own a newer year R8 or a lower mileage older R8 given the same price? Many thanks.

My 2009 R8 V8 stickered at about Canadian $184,000 when it was new (it had virtually every option available at the time, aside from the alcantara headliner), and after 53,000 kms, it was sold for just shy of $100,000. You won't get that if you trade it in, of course, but if you're patient and find the right buyer...

I think generally, the R8 does hold its value quite well, and some of that is down to the fact that it sits at a lower price point than Ferraris and Lamborghinis to begin with. There are more people aspiring to be R8 owners than there are people aspiring to be Ferrari and Lamborghini owners, simply because it's more feasible (I'm not including the dreamers as prospective purchasers). With greater demand, the prices are better able to withstand downward pressure.

Of course, I could be talking complete nonsense.

    Re: R8/Other sports cars depreciation

When I purchased my 2.5 year old R8 I was looking for a high mileage example. Price new with options was £92,000. Purchased 2.5 years old for £54,000, with 32k miles on the clock. The reason I wanted a high mileage car is because although I drive it daily, I would only be adding approx 3k miles a year, therefore, year for year, I would be reducing the annual mileage. I now have a car that is 4.25 years old with 36k on the clock. Before purchase it was doing 12,800 miles per year, now it's doing since new 8,500 miles a year on average. The annual perceived mileage will get lower and lower, whilst other cars catch up.

After doing a price review using those publications that tell you the current selling price, and reviewing Autotrader, I recon I could now sell it for £49,000, a drop of £5,000, which I believe isn't bad for 1.5 years of ownership.

SebringSilver, yes, I also believe what you say is correct, everyone that sees my R8 comments on it, but I've known other owners of both Porsche and Aston Martin, not get any discussions about how beautiful their cars were. There is definately a desirable element to the R8, which of course, keeps the prices high.

If you're putting 12k/year on it, don't buy the lowest mileage one, buy the best deal. But to your overall question, if you buy it for the proper price, an R8 will depreciate less than the majority of cars out there.

My 2009's msrp was 136k in July 2008. It had 30,000 miles in Sept 2011 (3+ years) and appraised at 112K. I thought the car held its value very well.

    Hi
A little different in the UK, bought my march 2012' 3months old as an ex demonstrater.
New on the road price £130.0000, I paid £113,0000.
Due to major dust and sooting issues down the side and rear of the car, Audi UK purchased the car back off me for only £83,000........ 16 months of motoring and a loss of £30,000!!!!!
Work this one out in 16 months I only did 4500 miles approx. a mere £6.66 per mile or $10.59 .

What was so frustrating, is the car went back again and again, they even lent me a v10 coupe for a week. Drove 700 dry miles very little dust, shame my car went back, they just kept saying theirs no problem with mine. Should have taken the car back under the 30 exchange policy back in late June 2011.
Never mind we learn by our mistakes, even if it's a wee bit expensive. Ooch

Audi UK can be harsh at times. (most of the time!)The only time you'd get a good deal from them is if you px against a new car.
