So let's say you wanted a weekend car...

My R8 V10 is my daily driver, and sometimes, I still think about whether it makes sense to get a more dedicated weekend car. I had been looking at pre-owned Superleggeras when I was thinking of getting rid of my previous V8, but it didn't make a lot of sense to drive a Superleggera as a daily. It would make a pretty fun weekend car though, I assume, given its slightly more "raw" nature, but I'm just wondering if there's a point in getting a Gallardo Superleggera (not the 570) when its performance is actually no better than an R8 V10's in the first place. Sure, it's louder, but my Tubi will be installed very soon, so that's a moot point.

If you were looking for a weekend car to park alongside the R8, what would it be? Superleggera? GT3? Scuderia, if budget allows? Or would you get something like a Lotus, or maybe a Cayman R?

I can understand why you might want a weekend car but getting a gallardo which is so similar doesn't make sense I'd think

    get something completely different

edit: also funny to hear that a V10 mid-engine supercar just isn't good enough for a weekend car

My R8 is also my dd, and my weekend/track car is a supercharged Viper. It's totally different than the R8, as it is a lot of torque, totally raw and unrefined. But it always puts a big smile on my face.

Ford GT with a pulley and tune puts down 680 WHP. That's good for some weekend fun. Works for me.

Agree with Laurie on Viper. My V10 R8 is a weekend car. I transitioned out of a 2009 Viper ACR to the R8 and am happy I made the move but...

Having owned 3 Vipers, a 911 GTS, a bunch of Corvettes, and assorted other performance cars over the last 2 decades I have to say there is nothing more "raw fun" than the Viper. If it was a bit too raw/unrefined for you in previous iterations the 2013 should fit. If you want a different type of high performance experience the Viper is it.

Here's my 09 that ended up at Naples. It sold quickly.

Re: So let's say you wanted a weekend car...

    Thanks for the responses, folks.

I guess it's all relative. If our daily car was an Audi A6, the R8 would be a great weekend car. But when your daily driver is an R8 V10, it isn't easy to figure out what a weekend car (if indeed one were to decide that a weekend car is needed) should be. I can see why the Viper, in pretty much any of its many iterations, would be a great antithesis to an R8. But what if you're just not a "Viper" sort of guy?

Most of you seem to feel that the weekend car should be something more fierce (more power, more torque, more noise, etc.). Just wondering if any of you might feel that the weekend car could be simply something more fun. Is a Boxster Spyder or a Cayman R possibly more "fun" than an R8?

No (IMHO). I had a Cayman S, which I went from to the R8.

It's harder to get more fun than an Atom.

What do you want from your weekend car that the R8 doesn't already give?

Honestly? I can't complain about anything on the R8, especially the V10. It is, to me, quite simply the perfect car. The only thing that I'd look for in a weekend car, is something that's just "different". Obviously not different as in a Corolla, but something that's a sportscar still, but perhaps offering a different driving experience. Maybe a convertible? Perhaps a Vantage S Roadster? It doesn't have to be better, per se. In fact, I don't think there is a better sportscar out there except, arguably, the McLaren MP4-12C. Naturally, I know each and every one of us has a different definition of "better".

Re: So let's say you wanted a weekend car...

lol...I do smile at this as this is a great high quality problem indeed. My RS5 is my daily driver and finally buying an R8 GT as the weekend car... it is my all around choice as the '**** this is great' treat to myself toy.

That said I know (sort of not really) what you mean as i will still be looking for another car that would be a more dedicated track car still as neither car will cover that department. The boxster as said well above by Moggy will not do it...Cayman (maybe if highly modified), still not really...you will wonder quickly why you have a slower mid engine car...I run them over in my RS5 on the track...that IS fun. Ford GT actually is very interesting to me both design and more raw sports car feel, more so than a viper although the new viper is getting there for me though not my personal taste. But if you want different sounds like a convertible is the right route. Sounds like a new generation 911 cabriolet may be a good one as convertibles are really enjoyable and completely different driving experience from your coupe (miss my stasis tuned S5 cabriolet on a nice day) but something with way less power may feel lacking to you so the 911 may be better than the Boxster variants. If just pure regular road car fun maybe an older classic convertible.
