Head on down to Joplin, over to Tulsa, down to OKC and then stay on I-40 for two days. That'll get ya there. You're probably right at 18 - 20 hrs to Flagstaff.

Until you get to Texas, it's pretty mundane. Check out the leaning water tower as you get into Groom TX and the huge cross as you get through it. Spent many a night sleeping under that cross.

Just as you leave Amarillo, pay attention to the south (left) side of the road - the Cadillac Ranch is out there near the Helium exit. It's pretty easy to miss, but really a sight to see if you do happen to catch it.

If the wind is out of the south, make SURE you push the recirculation button on your a/c for the thirty miles or so west of Amarillo - the cow farms are massive and the ammonia in the air will literally take your breath away (not the thing to find late at night for the first time).

I-40 starts getting pretty at Mile 16 in Texas - look north and it appears that some huge prehistoric creature decided to start clawing the landscape out. It's amazing how much the landscape changes between mile 16 and mile 15. From flat to fun.

Albuquerque is a pretty city - lots of great canyon walls and such and the colors in the mountains in that area are exquisite. As you get closer to Grants, pay attention to the weather - some of the most interesting clouds I've ever seen seem to like to hang in this area.

Stop in Flagstaff, turn left on I-17 (south) and go spend a day in Sedona - it's about 45 min south of Flag. Beautiful place. Take 89 out of Sedona back up to Flag if you want an absolutely killer road and canyon scene. Well worth the extra 30 minutes of travel time.

Pop up north off of I-40 at Kingman and head up to Vegas for a day, head over the mountain to Pahrump, and then across Death Valley and on down to Baker and on westward until you hit the Left Coast. Killer trip.

Can you tell I've driven this too many times?

Make sure you look up desperado while you're out there.
