I like to say that i owned a 2010 gtr
And after a while i drove the car in auto mode
The paddles just dont do it for me.
I guess like the saying says you cant teach a dog new tricks.
I just like shifting and using the clutch ...i guess just call me old fashion.

I never drive my r-tronic r8 without using the paddles, yet I never drive the s-tronic q5 with them. I did try a few times when I first got the q5, but there was no feeling of involvement in the process. I know the q5 is no sports car, but I do find it weird that I never even think about using the paddles even after a hard run in the r8.

I never drive the R8 in Auto either, but I seldom use the paddles, and almost always default to using the stick to toggle up and down between gears. Is that weird?

Thats what I did when I had my M3 SMG and when I drive brothers RS5, never touched the paddles. At least like BMW Audi still gives you a big stick to play with unlike Ferrari, Maserati and Lambo that have the gayest little knob

My last two sports cars have been R tonic and the SMG. I love both of them. It makes me feel involved. The DCT does make the car faster but it is boring as hell. Makes the sports cars feel like a daily driver and way too smooth. I want something Brutal!

I think the clutch and rev matching is the fun part of driving manual ... changing with paddles or a up/down lever wouldn't be the same; however, I think for my next car I won't have a choice but to go for paddles. My benz currently has paddles but it has a terribly slow transmission so there's just no point - I leave it in auto always.

When I play Forza I use paddles I can't drive and shift gears at the same time LOL

Your post has helped me get a better handle on what it is that I like about the r-tronic: the paddles feel more like triggers, creating a visceral sensation in the body from the mechanical response, unlike paddles in a game or in the s-tronic on the q5 etc. You don't just know you've changed gear, your whole body feels it.

I think it's this feedback that creates a bond between the driver and car.

Stick manual drivers feel like they're doing all the work. Traditional auto drivers want it to feel like the car is doing all the work. With the r-tronic, it feels like there's a partnership with the car, that it's working with the driver to achieve the desired goal.

+1 ^ ... but it takes some time with the RTronic to achieve this symbiosis
