R8 sales plunge in anticipation of new model

Audi sold new R8s at approximately half the volume they normally sell during the last 6 months of 2012. As reported on GoodCarBadCar.net Audi sold only 299 new R8s in the last 6 months of 2012. The previous sales volumes for the four 6-month periods beginning with the second half of 2010 were 552, 600, 545, and 503. The good news is that existing R8s continue to be a relatively rare vehicle (only 4,585 sold since the end of 2007) which will continue to support resale values for those deciding to go for the 2014.

Re: R8 sales plunge in anticipation of new model

Locally in FL, they are really offering great 2012 R8 deals on r-tronics, even on the V10's. I was also up in Mass during the holidays (which is where I am originally from) and AUDI of Peabody mass was willing to knock off $17K off a a new R8 V10. I was really tempted but I really am eagerly awaiting to see what the 2014 STRONIC Feels like and I have heard that the V10 price will actually be a few $K less than last year.

Anyway, my thinking is if dealers are knocking off prices like that on leftover the 2012's due to the newer model changes, then i would think that the resales on previous years would be similarly affected, atleast if you are trading up anyway. We all know that Dealers only offer blackbook (aka auction price) on trades anyway but I have seen some pretty amazing prices on low mileage 2011's, almost hard to believe. I also saw a white 2012 V10 R-tronic spyder with 3800 miles on it for $154K and that probably suggest that the blackbook value on that car is perhaps $145K-$147K. Thats a huge drop. My buddy got killed on his black 2008 911 turbo once the 2010 PDK's rolled in. I suppose that's just the way it goes. A major technological change has the tendency to depreciate previous years and it appears even on an R8, which, IMO, has held its value better than any other car in its class. Ofcourse I think the manuals may keep their values a little better. But It will be interesting what happens to the 2012 r-tronics's. For me its a good thing as my clutch driving days are over with. I sure will miss roaring through the gears though. There is nothing like the machine-driver harmony that you get from a manual even if manually shifting is slower than the auto

Dealer offered me $150k on trade for a 2014. And, it's a slow go trying to sell it privately. Everyone who is considering a resale has already visited a dealer and is quite aware of the dealer discounts on new 2012 V10, R-tronics.

Audi Atlanta has been offering min 20K off 2012s for 2 months. There is a new loaded V10 at Schaumburg Audi that has been sitting for months. It's red which doesnt help and I'm betting they would take 25K off

While I'm sure the bulk of the drop in sales is directly attributable to waiters, I wonder if production was cut back as well. Sales to production would be intersting.

May well be due to the switch over at the factory, production was more than halved in order to change tooling etc and train staff.

I was there in April and it was pretty dead on the floor as they began the change over.

I've been in the market for an R8 for some time now. Instead of buying the R8 I've been buying up rental houses for less than this car that are providing 9-10% cash on cash returns. If you're wondering where all the buyers went I think that could be it! Every time I get the hair to buy the car I find another deal... go figure lol

Since when has buying a car ever been an investment? That's why they are called depreciating assets.

I worked as a waiter when I was in highschool. Never made enough to even think about buying a nice car though.

Or quite a few of us that just joined you guys that went ahead and bought the used ones rather than ordering new or the never titled 2012s on the lot still...although in the case of 3 of us here we bought the GTs that were used or barely moved that were at an attractive price point near the regular V10s and certainly the same if I had ordered a new regular V10 car.
