I'm torn between a new R8 or used Gallardo (about the same price). I was leaning toward the Audi till I saw the weights: R8- 3600lbs, Lambo- 3150lbs. Of course the Lambo also has the V10. What made you guys (girls?) choose the Audi?

Depends on your desires. The R8 is sophisticated, luxurious, refined, unique, limited and performance based with a heritage of winning races.
Lambo is raw, unrefined, definitely not luxurious, not as unique or limited and its performance is not as reliable or dependable as the R8.
Each car offers different qualities and characteristics and your buying decision has to be based on your values. Personally I like the warranty and dealer network of Audi which makes the R8 much more appealing as a daily driver and one that you can drive from Chicago to Miami without concern of adequate repair facilities along the way should they be required.

I too was debating the merits of a gallardo before I drove the R8.
Firstly..used gallardo..do not buy any model before an 06 the clutch and general reliability of these cars are poor.So much so that Lambo UK dealers will not sell these cars now.
Secondly running costs, the r8 can be used every day and will cost a few hundred pounds a year to run, from what I have heard the gallardo costs thousands every year.
Thirdly ,you cannot use the lambo as a daily drive ,it is noisy more cramped and rides quite harshly compared to the R8.
The gallardo is faster and noisier but according to most of the press the R8 is the the better drive,I would concur.
Finally as my mate said..'if you bought the lambo I would think you're a flash ****,the R8 is just cool.'
I don't buy second hands and can't afford a new Gallardo... hahahahaha...
No more R8...Jing jing sold after a year with only 7000km. A people mover as replacement.
I test drove both back to back, if you drive every day the R8 is much better... but the lambo is quicker and sounds better.
But point to point the R8 is quicker and easier to live with and cheaper to run
Also lambo london told me there will be a new Gallardo soon, which will bring the prices down of the old model.
The R8 is the only super car (with the looks - not a 911 as they don't look like one) but with out the headache.
PS I now have a black R8
Jamal
I have an R8, a friend of mine has a F430 and a Gallardo, so I can freely compare.
As others have noted, more unrefined power with the Gallardo, BUT, it needs to be driven hard. It is a pain in every day traffic.
Servicing costs are also high.
R8 is great fun, and also good in every day traffic.
Servicing and running costs are lower.
I did consider the gallardo briefly, but lambo have very poor dealer coverage in the UK and I live too far away for it to be workable. Also I want to be able to drive it every day where the r8 seems the more sensible solution.

if you go for a used Gallardo, try and stay away from the '04s. I had an '04 and had the clutch replaced at 5000 miles. Although, it was under warranty I was out of the car for a good month. I then traded it in for an '06 manual....much better imo! between the r8 / gallardo i think this is pretty subjective. I now have over 25k on my gallardo and no issues whatsoever. just keep in mind lamborghini's warranty is 2 yrs unlimited mileage. After that, things can get pretty pricey.
Previous cars have been used as daily/regular drivers, and the R8 for me had to be something that fell into that category (reliability/comfort/usability).
I'm not sure that a G would be the ideal car in that situation for me.
If I was chosing a car only for highdays and holidays though, it would be an altogether more difficult decision.
Not too sure how the r8 would do, but with the G it sometimes is a hassle. People will gawk at the car and take pictures while they're driving. Coming out of Jamba Juice for a quick smoothie and you will find 5-8 people surrounding it....it's not a very subtle car.
