Exclusive paint. How do you specify the color?

I'm going to do an exclusive color for my next one, and I was wondering how they get the paint color you want. Do you just show them a picture and they have paint specialist who can duplicate it, or do you have to find a paint code of some sort?

I just saw, quite possibly, the exact color I want, but I'm wondering how close they could get to it.

My dealer had a massive pile of sample swatches about the size of 2 credit cards which he brought out from an Audi exclusive briefcase IIRC.

As I understood it they were all of previous Audi colours rather than "colour to sample" paint, however it was my understanding at the time that if you could furnish them with a paint code then anything was possible

Either pick a sample from the VW or Audi range and give them the paint code or name. That's all I did. It was accepted without question or problem.

Or, confuse them considerably by giving them a sample of the colour you want. Although this should be possible, according to the catalogue, AoA are not known (from this forum) to be helpful or have any knowledge as to how to deal with special requests.

It will certainly be easier [quicker] if you can pick a colour from their range (past or present)

I would suggest you supply the paint code for the colour you want (what ever manufacturer that happens to be) including the variant as well.

I suggest you visit your local decent bodyshop and ask to look at their colour swatches.

Most paint companies use printed swatches, with the exception of Glasurit and R-M, who use actually sprayed out ones.

If in doubt about the colour (ie, what it will look like in real life, for a small investment, you could ask them to spray it out for you, maybe on an old car part, so that you can see it ini daylight, or even under sodium street light which due to metamarism, change the colour of the panel (some reds look brown, for instance).

If it is a color from Audi range NO problem at all. BUT, if it is a color from Japanese car there is a big chance that Audi will refuse to do it.

Small example-there is an R8 in Ford SVO Blue Metallic.

It might be from a different company, it might not. I saw it on a vintage Ferrari and have a picture of it.
