    What's the official running-in procedure?

Mine turns-up next Friday and I have some plans for it in August . Whilst there are sound engineering reasons why very occasional enthusiastic rev use early on is a good thing, I'm a firm believer in giving everything a chance to settle down and meld with each other. Just wondered what Audi recommends.

I could ask the dealer, but that's way too easy (and I'm currently on holiday 8 time zones away )

    As per the manual:

first 1,000km (~600 miles): no full throttle, no greater than 6k rpm

1,000km -2,000km (~600 miles to 1200 miles) no full throttle

2,000km to 2,500km (~1,200 miles to 1500 miles) can increase engine speed gradually and briefly to 8,250rpm

Pretty similar instructions from my dealer, keep revs below 6,000 rpm for 1st 600 miles; below 7,000 rpm till 1,000 miles; gradually increase rpm range to use the full 8,250 rpm from 1K to 1.5k miles. Nothing said about an early oil or any other fluid change, other than to check oil level.

From some postings on various RS4 sites, it seems some of Rs4 versions of the 4.2 engines have used during breakin, and some continue to use, more oil than their owners would like to see, i.e. approaching @ 1 liter or so per 1,000 miles? I haven't heard of any such concerns from any R8 owners, and I've no idea how prevalent or real the concerns of the RS4 owners have been.

FWIW, I've now got @ 2,900 miles on the car, and as yet haven't had to add any oil. I picked up a couple of quarts from the dealer to have on hand just in case. Based on the dealer's comments to me, the dealer "recommended/required" motor oil, Castrol "Special Edition" TXT 505-01 for "pump-nozzel engines**" may not be readily available at just any service station. From the dealer at least, the price per liter seems relative to other motor oil pretty expensive at @ $28 per liter in the US.

BTW the "**" seems to refer to the lableing on the back of the container, "Special engine oil formulated specifically for use in VW group pump-nozzle diesel engines without extended drain interval. ..... carries an SAE 5W-40 weight rating.

    HTH, Cheers

There was a thread about r8 oil usage here:

How Much Oil Does Your R8 Use?

A litre around the first 1,000 miles seems pretty normal with the oil usage dropping over time and the recommended oils seem to vary by region.
