There are other threads on this.
The gauge gives accurate rreadings when the vehicle is moving with a constant airflow.
In traffic, heat from the engine is not disipated and will cause high readings.
This is normal.

the gauge is sitting behind the rear fender, at the track it shows about 50 C

The sender is fitted right in front of the RIGHT FRONT radiator, And will heat up off the latent heat from the rad if stationary.
