    Help Engine+clutches overheat!

    Hi ..

    I am having a problem in my 2009 R8 R-Tronic
    • When I stop the car and the engine is on for some time like 20 minutes (chatting with a friend next to me) the engine heat goes hiiiiiiiigh!!!! and gives me a signal that the engine is overheated !!!!
    • And when I use the sport button to take off from gear one the car doesn't move !!! and gives me a signal saying clutches overheated !!!
but when not using the sport button the clutches are perfect !!!

any one with the same issues ????

I suspect that may be down to "user error". I really don't think it is good for any engine to be left idling for 20 minutes! 5 minutes max idling, then turn off the engine.

Is this after idling for 20 minutes, or at all times? Anyway, that sounds like a problem with a temperature sensor on the gearbox, or other related electrical/sensor problem. Get it checked out by the stealer.

Maybe idling the car for 20 minutes in the summer heat of Dubai is too much for a car designed and built in the cool climate of Germany...?

Seriously though, Taiwan's tropical heat just wreaks havoc on certain cars such as Jaguars here.... They just keep busting.... and my tech (BMW) tells me it's due to the heat and humidity here that the cars can't operate well.....

In all seriousnous, all car engines, irrespective of the locality they operate in, really are not designed to be left idling. Only engines specifically designed to run at "low revs", such as massive ships engines, should be run at such low speeds. Even static engines used in generators and the likes will run way above their natural idle.

The other issue is that when idling, the engine is under a "no load" situation, and this causes accelerated wear on the side of the piston not designed to take such useage.

Interesting . . . do you have Mk5 Golf GTIs in Taiwan, and if so, do they have the additional coolant radiator behind the left front fog lamp grille?

My wife's got a Mk5 Golf but I haven't opened to see if that's the case. My tech friend was telling me that there are cooling issues with cars with large cc's such as the Jag, Aston Martin, and Ferrari. Nothing on German cars though. My BMW E60 works very fine as well...
