I got together with a fellow 2009 R8 owner, and was surprised to see that his Turn Indicator lights and Daytime Running Lights work differently than mine. In his car, when he turns on the turn indicator, his DRLs on just that side go out. In my car, the DRLs stay on. It's obviously because it makes the front turn indicator light much more visible when it's not right next to those bright LEDs. It does make it less hidden, but it's kinda strange to see one of the two DRLs go out.

So I checked his MMI to get the version of his car. Our cars are both USA spec cars, both 2009's. Both of ours are Software version 0260. But his Hardware version is 16, and mine is 15. So this may be a change to the headlamp unit itself?
