A few weeks ago my Manual R8 started having a rattling noise in the rear end which disappeared when the clutch was depressed.
I took it down to my Audi dealer and they concluded that the gearbox needed replacing and that they would air freight a brand new one in from Germany.
Well they had my car for 3 days last week and replaced the box but basically had to pull half the car apart to get the task completed including the rear bumper, spoiler, tailights, oil tank, exhaust plus more.
Must give Audi and this dealership full marks for the way they handled this warranty issue and the detail of the work they provided in the gearbox replacement such as removing the clutch.... and testing the pressure of each finger on the clutch plate and wear on the twin plates
For those concerned about clutch wear in these models... mine had very little wear and dust after 10,000k of hard driving.
I also had the car given its first full service which was 5000K early and the diagnostics showed no faults in the engine and nothing else wrong with the R8
One surprising find thou was that brake pad wear was at 40% for the rears and 50% for the fronts. This is despite my use of the down shifting when I am slowing down.
The car drives now drives great and Audi have put the car back together with the level of detail expected.
The mechanic did state that these boxes are from Lamborghini and failure is very rare. The fault in mine turned out to be a hardened rear main shaft bearing.
Should also mention that I identified to the dealership that the leather on the drivers seat was starting to lift and they have agreed without fuss to have it replaced under warranty.(not sure how yet)
Audi here in Australia has been fantastic in resolving any warranty issue..I hope you are all finding the same in your own country.
