    Which Oil?

Which oil do you guys use for top ups between services?

I'm looking at things like Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 and Castrol Edge 5W-30

    Re: Which Oil?

I use castrol edge 5w 30 (I did use castrol SLX powerflow professional 5w 30 but the edge one superseded it).

That oil meets VW 504 00 which is ok for both service interval types.

My dealer gave me Castrol TXT 5W-30 505 01 to top off.

    Re: Which Oil?

I guess I should add that the dealer gave me the SLX powerflow pro 5w 30 initially to top up with hence sticking with castrol.

    Re: Which Oil?

Change your oil regularly .. I go no more than 5,000 miles in my RS4 ... Why you may ask, well the engine beats the crap out of the oil that also goes back round the intake .... poor oil will stick to the inlet valves.

I suggest you all read this thread that discusses FSI engines and carbon build up.

    Re: Which Oil?

I agree that the oil should be changed more regularly.

I was astonished to discover that the recommendation for UK cars is 20K miles/2 years on the same oil but I certainly won't wait that long

Perhaps Audi take into account that the relatively high oil consumption of these engines means that top-ups every 1500 miles or so effectively replace the oil on a rolling basis

    Re: Which Oil?

that 20k/2yrs is the maximum on the flexible service, but I can't imagine the cars computer waiting that long to request a service.

I just checked mine, which is coming up to 12 months old in a couple of weeks. The car has 6,200 miles on the clock and the flexible service indicator is showing 5,700 miles/324 days until the service is due making it just under 12k miles to the first service if I wait for that.

I'm going to see if I can do the annual/10k servicing with the service agreement plan thing I took out when I got it - I was told I could when I bought it but the proof is in the pudding...
