Hi guys,
I am wondering if any of you has information on the R-Tronic transmission.
- Any idea how long it takes to change gears? (how many seconds? or milli-seconds?)
- Is it true it's not a DSG but rather a E-gear (some say an advanced E-gear)?

I can answer that it is definitely NOT DSG
kreso said it was 200ms in sport mode in this thread:
Rtronic
interestingly, in the car magazine article for the v10 they quote a sub 100ms time for the v10 r-tronic:

r-tronic is single clutch not dual (unlike dsg) so it works like bmw's smg transmission.

The only way I like to R-Tronic is with the paddle shifters. In automatic mode the R-Tronic is jerky. Since my hands are on the steering wheel already I don't see a reason to take them off the wheel and shift with the gear shifter.

agree, auto mode is a bonus to the paddles rather than the paddles being a bonus as in tiptronic. at the end of the day, it's still a manual gearbox.

When I encounter turns so tight that my arms may cross ,I have no alternative but to drop right hand down and shift at stick....Remembering forward =upshift, backward =down shift ! Maybe a touch of dislexcia !!!!!!!!!!!!! In auto mode the car gets into 6th gear so soon !!! It doesn't stay in auto very long as I revert back to paddles for down shifts. My R 8 does't seem to like being in sport and auto.I only use sport mode while in manual.thus no jerkiness.![]()

I personally enjoy shifting up and down using the shifter rather than the paddles, I guess it's a matter or preference.

nothing wrong with that, at least you are still the one making the decision for when the change is made.

I also don't understand why R8 owners keep insisting that there will be a DSG version for the R8 ... there just will not be!
The R8 V10 still has the R-Tronic ... what does that tell you?: no DSG, end of story![]()

I have the R-tronic and always drive in sport/manual mode. Usually shift with the shifter. It seems to make the shifts a bit smoother if you lift off the throttle slightly and breifly during the shift. It takes some practice to get the timing right but that is part of the fun!
