Gearbox Exposed?

Looking at some pictures of the R8 with the rear bumper removed, I can't help feeling the gearbox is awfully exposed. The crush structure extrusions on the chassis rails 'look' slight and quite sacrificial. I am assuming inside the plastic part of the bumper these is quite a substantial reinforcement? Anyone know what the black pad on the end of the gearbox is for.

It 'ooks' like quite a small shunt would result in quite major damage, especially as if the bumper hits the geabox this will get pushed back into the firewall. Expensive!!

Look at my pics of the rear without the plastic and then tell me what you think.It did not alarm me when I looked under there. Or did you see my gallery pic of rear already??

I can't find the photo, but it had the rear bumper and exhaust removed and the three things that stuck out were the gearbox and two fairly small extrusions which I assume attach to the bumper and re-inforcement. I'll see if I can get a copy.

BTW, LOVE those PPI(?) air filters, must get those!
