I am currently number 3 on the list at my local Porsche dealer for the GT3 MKII. The audi dealer next door has an R8. I plan on driving it here in Southern California and was wondering what you all have to say about it. Thanks!

Asking that question in an R8 forum isn't going to yield you much support for the Porsche. Although we are all car people, our hearts are currently won by the R8. 911's are magnificently engineered, superbly balanced and may be the quintessential sports car of the modern era. That being said, the R8 is pure art. Ive said this before and it appears Ill say it again, the appeal of an R8 crosses all demographics, all rungs on the socioeconomic ladder, and all generations. Its appeal is universal and massive. If you've had Porsche's, you owe it to yourself to own the R8. Its sublime.

I spoke with a friend yesterday who has a MKII, and has had Porsches for a while, and he could not stop talking about the R8. His tongue hit the floor when I happened to mentioned the V10.
For me its a question of the smile factor. The problem with a 911 is that you see it (in one form or another) on evry street corner while the R8 is still very rare. You just smile more when you see/drive one. I dont think that most of us drive these cars to the limit so if the 911 is better by 10% I will never get close enough to realize that... bottom line, i wanted a 911 since i was 15 and had one on order until the Audi dealer here said they are importing the R8. I was the first one to order/get one and I would never trade it in for a 911..
We traded my 911 C4S for the R8....I loved the Porsche...but no doubt, the R8 was a most worthy trade! We drove a GT3 just previous to the purchase of the R8...and while it was an outstanding handling car...it rode like a buckboard...strong and harsh! The R8 is a bit more refined! Go for the R8!!!!!!!!!!!!

Generally people hate anyone driving a Porsche. An R8 however, seems to put a smile on everyone's face, young or old, rich or poor.

The R8 is the better "all rounder" if you want an everyday car as well as some track time.
Plus, as already noted, unique looks, refinement and awe and respect from everyone else !
Well, if U live in SoCal, U aint going to be speeding much, and you'll probably get popped when U do. So unless U track a whole lot, the GT3 is just not happening in a very good way. Heck it has an almost identical interior to a Boxster. It is very cramped inside, and not very refined. And you just dont ever get much love while driving it.
The R8 ontheotherhand, has a huge state of the art interior, that constantly reminds that its a most stylish, modern, elite sports car. It is still wicked wicked fast, and handles on the track even better than the GT3. ( Yes, i have huge time in both on the tracks). And the R8 is easier to drive in heavy trafiic, and you will be much more comfortable as you wait on the SoCal freeways.
And the reactions that everyone here is talking about, is completely true. Everyone smiles when they see this car.

i have had both...GT3 is an awesome track car with almost no equal. on the street its ok....the style is nice but boring. the audi is beautiful and so comfortable and nice to drive. 2 completely different cars
This car produces five times the downforce as the old GT3... this car is now quicker from 100 km/h to 200 km/h than the 997 TURBOWOW. A really great article on the new Porsche GT3 MK11. I learned much. Porsche has again squeezed significantly better performance from that great, old, obsolete 997 chassis. My honest salute to Porsche engineers."This is the only 911 that comes close to matching the communicative handling qualities of the (mid-engine) Porsche Cayman"
But when will we ever see the classic, old 911's mid-engine replacement??!!
I'm ready!!
