The engine in my R8 had a terminal episode of smoke and seizure a few days ago.
I was pulling in 2nd gear at around 7000rpm when without warning i heard a noise similar to a shot water pump bearing.I immediately backed off and a huge plume of smoke appeared behind the car.The engine light then came on and the car stalled.Smoke continued to pour out of the back and I was scared that there was a fire somewhere in the engine bay but I couldn't see at all where the smoke was coming from.Thankfully after 15!!! mins the smoke eased.
It obviously came as a great shock as I have never abused my R8 but have driven in a sporting manner on occasions. I have had the oil changed every 5000k since new with full servicing by the Audi dealer.
The car was towed to the Audi dealer where they removed the engine .This has caused massive damage internally with the valves and pistons etc.
Audi are now importing a brand new crate engine from Germany which will take about 2 weeks to get here.
Obviously this is not something any of us want to happen but I understand things mechanical do break and I am reassured by Audi's total full support and doing the right thing by supplying a new motor.
Apparently? this is not the first engine to exhibit this same fault or failure.
Fyi the motor has done 18000k and the car was built in June 08.
Morale of the story is you just never know.
Still love the car and brand and I guess i come out with a brand new engine to run in again.![]()
