    Targa or Moonroof possible?

I for one was really hoping that the R8 convertible would be a targa. As a full convertible for me it has 3 strikes against it:

    1) It has lost the signature sideblades.
    2) It has lost the engine-under-glass.
    3) I am also not a fan of cloth tops on any car.

I would love to convert my R8 to a Targa. It seems like the lines to cut the roof are fairly obvious. But what would it do to the body rigidity? Does the convertible R8 have the same body frame? If some additional members were added to the convertible for body rigidity, then maybe they could be retrofitted on a regular R8.

If a Targa is too invasive, then what about a Moonroof?

Has anybody else done or contemplated doing this?

I'm happy Audi chose an R8 Spyder over a Targa.
A moonroof is a sunroof right? That should be something already on the R8 imo, I don't like cars without them

That is one thing that I really do wish I had in the car.

I miss having an open hole in the roof. I've wondered if there were any shops that would be worthy of adding a roof. Even a smaller opening like in an old 928 would suffice.

Generally speaking, a moon roof is clear or smoked glass while a sun roof tends to be solid.

A T-bar targa would be cool.

I am glad the R8 does not have a sun/moon roof or even a targa top. I hate them. It is one more thing that can leak, allows more noise in the car, reduces structural strength and lowers the headliner (less head room).

Do you remember seeing the picts of the V12 TDI? It had a solid bar down the middle (which also had the ducting for the intake) & solid pieces around the edges and tinted glass pieces over the seats. Maybe someday they will consider this again. It did not look like any of the roof opened, but it would allow taller people to see traffic lights that are semi close and let you see those **** CHP airplanes.

Smile Re: Targa or Moonroof possible?

My main reason for the moon roof...See the police in the air... and the sun and moon. I think the R8 is PLENTY stiff for a small hole up there. IS the R8 spyder heavier/reinforced? Porsche Targas are. What does the pop up roll bar look like on the R8 Spyder ? The moon roof in my truck, Targa on the 911, gave me MORE headroom. SDR8 is atall guy that could use the extra room !

Despite reinforcements in the area of the sills, the center tunnel, the rear wall, the floor pan and the A- and B-pillars, the body weighs only 216 kilograms (476.2 lb) – just 6 kilograms (13.23 lb) more than that of the R8 Coupé.
    Yes it is

Question Re: Targa or Moonroof possible?

Does anyone know if the R8 Spyder has a pop up roll bar like so many other convertibles??

Not sure, I can only find a pic of the wind deflector.

    Says here tho...

To break up the mass of rear bodywork two vented flying buttresses extend towards the back of the car, and there are roll-over bars hidden in the bulkhead.

Thumbs up Re: Targa or Moonroof possible?

    Really needs a CLEAR bulkhead.
