    I lost the car

I have become a bit more daring in my usual desert runs lately and have been turning the ASR off during some corners where the road is wide. This gives me the ability to drift and have a bit more fun.... these drifts have been usually very controlled and if I overdid it the esp would get involved. Well I took a corner in second gear and floored it midway through the corner I lost the back in a mille second and spun off the road and landed about 15 meters from the edge of the road. As it is the middle of the desert there was no side walk etc so I landed in deep sand and was lucky enough not the hit any rocks etc... (The 4 wheel drive was useful when trying to get out). I was very surprised just how fast I lost the back... never happened before...this car can bite...

Thumbs up Re: I lost the car

MFSC my freind, Only turn off the traction controll when there is perfect traction. You must have encountered a little sand. Or maybe a lot ! (ALOT-not a word!) Good to hear you were able to 4 by out of there! Off roading can be fun too! Hope your windows were up , cuz sand/dirt loves to fly into an R8...I have seen this happen ! (not to me yet) And 'till someone convinces me that drifting is the fastest way around a turn in the R 8...I'll continue to think drifting is all show and not go faster.

I expected to lose the back and have done in many times before but it is usually very controlled and I get out easily with opposite lock... yes my windows were closed and to be honest it was a lot of fun but i was very lucky... there could have been more sand then usual on the road...

At least no damage done to you or the car!

I always subscribe to the theory that the fastest way round a corner isn't sideways ;-)

Agree but it is the most fun... I was just a bit shocked as I take corners with this car at stupid speeds... (double the legal limit in the UK...) and it sticks to the road no understeer or oversteed so neutral... it just make you feel like you will never lose grip...and then this happened

I guess at the limit there is only a gnats **** between adhesion and a spin.

Just a reminder as to how much the perfect engineering in this car can have you feeling like Superman!

You are not invincible, nor is the car. The R8 V8 just makes you feel that way; this is the danger.

If you were taking the corner at 140 mph (or thereabouts), and floored it midway in the corner, then the reaction is to be expected.

Also with ASR off, the car cannot help you.

Try the same maneouvre with another car, and I guess you would have come off worse and at slower speeds too.

He said he was in second gear and floored it. So way below 140, maybe 20-40ish?

No matter the car, things happen. In the real world there are always a lot of varriables that we do not have control of or know of.

Glad you are ok, and hope nothing too bad happened to the car.
