    R8 as a daily driver

This is my first post on this forum, and this topic will probably have been posted before, so I apologize if I'm asking something that's been answered previously. I don't have an R8 (yet), but I've really enjoyed reading the threads here and I've found this resource extremely helpful for narrowing down the choices for my next purchase decision.

I've noticed many of you have quite a few cars, many of which are at least as interesting as the R8, and often times more valuable. So I'm wondering, how many of you are using your R8 as your daily driver. And for those of you who answer in the affirmative, how well does it behave and how practical is the R8 in that role?

My sportscar experience is primarily limited to two NSXs I had when I was much younger and didn't have children. And I suppose I'm mainly interested in the R8 because it embodies some of the same attributes that made the NSX such a great car - the fact that it was sporty yet practical.

I'm mainly looking into the 4.2 right now, as it fits my budget better, and I'd really appreciate any input you folks might have on life with the R8 as your regular day-to-day car.

If reliability is important , then it seems you can't beat the R8. Some pretty famous celebrities have sworn off the Italian makes. Just too embarrasing when the thing won't start in front of the club!! So far, I can return from a two week trip and fire the R 8 up and go have some real fun. Everytime I turn that key...I forget my **** name. (Kiss, "Domino").

Thanks! And yes, reliability would be a very high priority for me as, like many of you, I have to keep regular office hours and getting to and from work is not something that I want to worry about.

Something else I forgot to mention, fuel consumption. What kind of cruising range is the 4.2 R8 capable of getting to a full tank of fuel in, say, a 50/50 mix of city and highway driving?

Re: R8 as a daily driver

I have had my R8 since late April and have almost 7K miles on it so far. I drive it every other day or so. It is a very fun and reliable car. It has caused me to drive a lot more per month than I used to, because I enjoy it so much. I do drive a BMW X5 too. I could not just have the R8. I need versatility. Sometimes I need to carry more than 1 passenger. Other times I need to pick up bigger items or need to go on some rough or dirt roads. If the weather is bad, the R8 will stay in the garage (not because of my driving or how the car does, but the other idiots around).

My milage in the R8 goes up to 20 mpg or so on the freeway and the computer usually shows 14-15 for my normal mix of driving which is mainly city stuff and I am a bit heavy footed on takeoffs.

I would say that you can drive it daily but I wouldn't want it as my only car for practical reasons.

Thumbs up Re: R8 as a daily driver

If an R8 were your only veh., you would need a trailer. I have yet to see an R8 towing a trailer. And if I had to make a choice, take away all my other vehicles - but leave the R8. Then, I would have to start towing !!

    Thanks, guys.

I won't be relying solely on the R8 as my only car, as I plan on keeping the C63 and alternating between the two cars on a regular basis. The S4 is an '06, and it's starting to get a tiny bit long in the tooth now, with little creaks and rattles here and there, so whatever I choose to get in the way of a 2-door sports coupe, it'll be the S4 that'll have to make way.

My real dilemma is that I won't have a proper winter car if I've only got the R8 and the C63. Hmmm....

Well, you sure seem to love your R8. Haha...

I guess I'll have to take that into account. No one feels so much conviction about owning something without just cause.

Re: R8 as a daily driver

Aside from the attention, the R8 is a very good daily driver. A bit awkward to get out of sometimes (especially in tight parking situations), but otherwise a great car. I fill up once weekly (premium of course).

Naturally, though, you can't take it on a shopping spree (or a weekly grocery shopping trip) as space is limited.
