Firstly I wanted to point out two other engine failure posts on this site:

My R8 had low mileage on it when this issue occurred. Just 10000 kms / 6000 miles and then out the blue a faint clanging noise coming from the engine. The best way I could think to describe the noise was two pieces of large metal slapping together continuously. It sped up as I revved the engine so I assumed pistons/cylinder problems.
Anyways, it happened about 2 weeks ago on a perfectly clear and sunny Sunday. I had just washed the car and was driving it around when I heard the sound. I called Audi South Africa and they sent someone around to see if they could solve it without having to bring it into the dealer's workshop. The guy couldn't solve it so he recommended they flatbed it to the dealer.
The dealer then started the investigation which took 1.5 weeks to find the problem. They said they found metal filings in cylinder 4. They had to insert an endoscope into the engine to finally get to the potential fault.
So it's a new engine for me. Took 5 days to arrive (10 days was the max they said it would take to arrive). Should have it back in 1.5 weeks.
My advice is ask your dealer to look at this post and start off with an endoscope into the engine to see what the problem is so you can speed up the solution. I had the same wait with the dealer trying to find the problem then communicating with their head office and then finally to germany.
Audi South Africa have been brilliant throughout this whole experience though. Organised a courtesy car and when I asked that they upgrade it they gave me a choice between an S5, Q7, S6. I'm a TT fan so the closest I could get to a small car was the S5
I'll try to get some pictures of the engine filings but i think they're probably going to be the same as the above picture. I'll see if I can get a recording of the engine noise which should help some of you identify the problem.
Hope this helps.
