Any of you guys do auto-slalom?

I had someone from the local car club approach me at the gas station to suggest that I should come out to auto-slalom. I am pretty sure it was because of my R8 and not my infectious charm. Anyone here auto-slalom with their R8 and have any thoughts about doing so? I am kind of concerned about smashing cones and making a mess of the vehicle. On the other hand it looks like a lot of fun.

if auto-slalom is synonymous with auto-crossing, then yeah I did it. Was pretty fun. Even got vid of me spinning out

Yep, great fun - even won a couple of events in a Caterham and an Elise. For my victory drive once, they said go out and show us how it should be done - one particular part was to drive in fwds, stop back out etc etc. Got to that bit, ego ablaze, stopped in the box, went for reverse while it was stopping, missed the gear and look like a tit when it rev'd the nuts off it and went nowhere - humility restored ;-)

Think the R8 is a bit big to win though but you will make everyone drool/smile though.
    Best Regards, Ian

I have noticed that Honda 2000's seem to do quite well in this particular club.

I've not autocrossed. I have met several guys at track days who "used" to autocross. They all make the same two comments:
    1) It is a fantastic way to learn all about car control when driving at the limit, and they really enjoyed doing it.
    2) 25 minute sessions at the track vs 2 minute runs autocrossing have made track converts out of them, and they don't autocross much anymore.

The other advantage of course is that autocross can be done locally; not everyone has a full road course conveniently close by.

If you are truly exploring the limits of the car, you will likely hit some cones and they will leave rubber marks on the front bumper. I've had this happen quite a bit during skid-pad exercises held during Audi Club Driver Education Events. Tape or Film can be used to protect the paint.

Ya - I don't have a track nearby so no alternative there. Think I am going to give this a try in the spring. What type of tape or film should I use?

Thumbs up Re: Any of you guys do auto-slalom?

Come on Desparado-You must have plenty of slalom experience!! Getting as close to the cones with-out touching only prepares you for getting close to other vehicles while going fast. The slalom exersizes were a bit intimidating-You know I am completely anal when it comes to taking care of the bodywork/CARBON FIBER SPOILERS. I didn't know BOTH sides of the R8 well enough, 'till the all important slalom. The skid pad has to be #2 for track safety/feel. These two important exersizes can be practiced at any empty lot, if not breifly, till the cops arrive. Do your business and split the scene. Give me more slalom !!!!!!!!! Even being an inch longer than a Gallardo the R 8 is an excellent slalom car. Can't wait to see Outsiders video.Desparado , you did send me a vid of my car on skidpad -but I managed to stay out of your camaras full view. See you at Buttonwillow Dec.20th ?? I am fired up !!!!!!!!!

As posted on some older threads, several people like the blue painters masking tape. I think I saw 2-3 layers were recomended. It goes on very easy, comes off easy and is pretty cheap.

DANG !! I was referring to the weave in 'n out the straight line of cones . Audi clinic style. Your Vid is the true auto slalom. But a skid pad is a skid pad.
