    Tire pressure light question

I just took my car out for the first time in a while. Says check tire pressure. Does this mean the pressure is low or too high? Any way to tell which tire it's talking about? Tires look fine to me. They are R888s and look like they always did as far as i can tell. I'm guessing it has to do with the drop in temperature lately.

Should I just add some air to each? I know you can adjust pressure based on a lot of things, so I'm wondering if it's just too low in general or what.

I would guess it's more likely you have lost pressure than the air fairy suddenly filling your tyres in secret.

Hate to say the obvious but, why not put a pressure gauge on them and see?

I know more air isn't present, but I thought it might be to due with the changing temperature. I actually don't recall the recommended pressure, nor do I have a gauge.

A very cold tyre will show a decrease in pressure - but not enough to warrant a TPS message I would have thought. Thus if car has not been driven for some time I would say you've lost some air.

Pressures are on the sticker inside the door shut of the drivers door. I'd get a gauge and/or a footpump!

WEDOUGLAS, we have to get you on course.Try Harbor freight for a digital pressure gauge-Ten bucks. Don't leave your driveway without 39 pounds front,36 pounds rear- COLD .That and fluids/oil and you are ready for ACTION. Not much maintenance compared to most other supercars. DON'T rely on warnings from the diagnostics! I used to do that. You will feel great knowing you have done all you could. This stuff is mandatory for EVERY man ,woman,or kid (DD) who drives. There is a dipstick. Right there next to the oil filler. Why wait till the computer says you are low on oil ?? Use ONLY oil that says VW 502 00.To avoid voiding your warranty !! Hope you change your ways. Doing ANYTHING positive for your car will bring you much satisfaction. Just take care not to hurt yourself or the car.

    Harrison: 100% agreed

WED: I have a TPMS light a year or so ago. Checked the pressure and found one was 6psi low. Turned out to be a slow puncture, which was repairable.

Following the warning light saved me the cost and headache of buying a new tyre.

Anyway, you should have an electric pump in your Audi tool kit in the trunk.

    A $20 investment in a gauge to save a $500 tyre is a no brainer !

Low profile tires are hard to judge pressures by looks alone. Major differences can be obvious, but slight ones are usually not to visible. As the owners Guide suggests, you should check the pressures on a regular basis with a gauge.

The TPMS light does not tell you which tire (or even if it is too high or too low), just that one of them is out of a range.

    Re: Tire pressure light question

I received a digital pressure gauge last Christmas. The gauge was purchased at Radio Shack. The cost was under $30. It measures tire pressure to within 0.5 PSI. I now have them in all four cars.

I let the computer tell me when my oil is low. In fact, it said to add 1 qt max just today. This car goes through oil still. I don't get it. I have 11.5K miles and it still goes through some oil every couple thousand miles it seems.

Post Re: Tire pressure light question

I have heard of 1 qt per 1000 miles on other race vehicles. But an R 8 ?? Really does not make Audi look good. They admit inconsistency though.Maybe you could tell Audi you want an R 8 that DOESN'T burn oil. There are a few out there. That sounds reasonable to me. You have heard buy from us-free gas for a month?, Well Audi might say Buy an R 8 - Free oil for a month!! Do the other V8 Audi models DRINK earl too?
