Anyone else get this?
If I have the steering wheel hard left or right, the wheels knock against something...is this usual?

yes, scrubbing tyres, possibly low rumbling sound on full lock at very low speed (pulling out of a driveway). Normal.
Pretty much every Audi I've had (S4, A6, A3 to a lesser extent, now R8) does that.

Hardly any power steering system, in any car, likes being held at full steering lock for very long. Much less an R-tronik.( just got through replacing the pump and slave cylinder on a Jeep). No fun.

thank heavens for that...it's quite a noise...was pretty worried for a while....actually quite a pain in the arse driving around London with it, there's of full lock situations!
Our '09 6MT does the same and I don't really recall it during the first 5k miles. Now it almost feels like a rubbing/skipping along the road or driveway. Like on a slippery surface. Nothing during normal in-line driving, though. With the comments here, I am now less concerned, but may still mention to my tech next time she goes in for regular service.
Happy New Year to all and safe motoring.
this comes up so often - pity the site owners have no real interest in the r8 or they'd have made at least one of the threads into a sticky eg:
major noise and vibration when turning wheels at low speed

Yep, could use a thread with a consolidated view of this - a knowledge base article? From the AudiR8Pilots talk by a suspension engineer it is caused by the locked torque split to the rear wheels pushing the car forward and the tyres, being on lock, camber up and then they skip. Most noticeable in cold weather and on rutted surfaces (that'll be all of London then...)
