Normal Oil temp?

Blatting home on a dry road at last, I got the 'Refill Oil' warning in the DIS, at the same time I looked at my oil temp and it was running about 120 - I have to admit other than checking that the oil was warm, I have never clocked what is normal...... Was surprised as the ambient was 0.5C and 'thought; it would run cooler in that sort of temp...

Mine eventually seems to sit just below mid way on the gauge regardless of ambient temp or driving style. Having said that I have not had her on a track as yet.

anywhere from 10 degrees celsius to -5, mine sat at slightly above midway.

Mine, sounds closer to yours than Colins which appears to run cooler but that could be the V10 I guess..

Mine runs just above half way.

On track on a 34C day it just touched the 3/4 mark(10 laps)

Hmm well can only see that mine runs at around 115 C in general, going up to 120-124 C under heavy to very heavy usage (off-track), this is more or less true from 40+ C to low 20s C. I've noticed that the oil temperature only seems to change slightly due to the external temperature differences my car experiences.

just got back from track. air temp was 83 F, so not a terribly hot day at all. oil temp hit close to 280 F (300 is max!) and yellow engine light came on. had been running the car quite hard, but not abusing it (many 2nd gear downshifts at the hairpins and then driving her up to redline before shifting into third). temp would decrease markedly with slow laps (to the 210 F midline), but would climb up once again rather quickly afterwards even if i avoided anything lower than 3rd gear and kept the revs down to less than 7000 rpm.

i never had the oil temp rise like this on my B7 S4 or my V8 R8 even in 95 F weather!!! my car has the APR tune.

by the way. i did 2.5 sessions. the first session i had no issues, but did not drive it hard. the temp increase occurred during the second session. after this session i let the car cool down and popped the hood, but on the next session decided to finish early because the temp just seemed to hang between 3/4 and red markers of the oil temp gauge. i then drove home with no problems- the engine temp stayed perfectly at midline the whole time. before the ECU tune i drove it almost as hard at the track and had no issues at all.

car has 5500 miles and has only been fed the 5-40 castrol syntec VW 502 00 VW recommended oil.

any ideas???
