    Auto mode for v10 r-tronic

Have the car for about a month and have put 600 miles. Love the car so far! Is it normal for the car to lurch so much in auto mode? I usually use the paddles/shifter, but on the rare occasions that I've used
'auto' mode it seems like the shifts are very rough

yes, confirmed by others with R tronic...I have a 2009 v8 r-tronic and it does the same thing. You can make it shift smoother in auto by modulating the throttle. I notice it is much smoother when I am accelerating but when just puttering around it is jerky. But 99 percent of the time, like you, I shift manually. One of the techs at the Audi dealership told me that this is a auto manual transmission with a automatic mode not an automatic with manual mode.

yep, the transmission itself is the same as the stick manual - they just basically strap a robot to it to do the clutch/shifts on demand via the paddles or via an algorithm in auto mode. the transmission can therefore only ever be as smooth as that robot can be programmed to do steps required for a manual shift - whereas an automatic transmission uses a different system to change gears which is inherently smoother.

I would check you have the 24R4 update which fixes this, although I guess it depends on how smooth you expect it to be? Before 24R4 if you modulate the throttle you could induce it to change up, after 24R4 the auto mode is as smooth as a automated manual can be, but still isn't like a torque converter epicyclic transmission or a dual clutch unit.

Even if we had a HYDRAULIC FLUID auto trans in our R8s, after a shift kit the thing would shift very HARD, like my '56 Chevy with Hi.perf.turbo 400 tranny. Neck-Snappingly good. Now a Caddilac, or Mercedes auto would be seamless in the gear changes. Barely noticeable. I just love the R-Tronic. Snap your fingers-Snap your neck. \"/ Want smooth? try the Standard. When shifted nicely the car could be as smooth as any soccer mom car. Can the R8 be shifted carefully without using the clutch? Like some vehicles I've tried? Just a drivers trick-not good for the tranny.

Push the sport button every time you get into the car....and the only use the paddles. Once the car is warm, it should shift very well!

My 2009 was better after the 24R4 flash, but still get the "lurch". As above I use sport mode with the paddles. Maybe double clutch in 2011 models?

Re: Auto mode for v10 r-tronic

As others have said here, the best way to drive the R-tronic is to do so in manual mode at all times. But what I've found is that when you're just puttering around town, shifting with the gear lever results in smoother transitions than with the paddles. I'm not sure why that is. On the highway though, use the paddles.

DBRF, in auto mode, do you get the 'lurch' in light to medium throttle mode or all the time. In mine, the only time I get a not 'smooth-as-a-babies-bum' change is in full throttle mode?

doesn't really make any sense other than psychological - both are just switches that send a message to the software to start the process of making the change.
