    Manual Vs R-Tronic

I am in the market for an R8. To be honest I haven't even driven the car yet. I am bored of the 911Turbo and sick of the maintenance on my current Italian Car.

I have heard that the R-Tronic sucks. Is it that bad? How does it compare to the SMG on a M6?

The GF doesnt drive stick and in coming from F1 Paddles I am a bit over the whole clutch thing..

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Pull the trigger on the R8 with paddles. Unless you are "old school". Well worth the extra few bucks, unless you are into rowing an old boat rather than skimming a hydroplane with power. This advice may save your car, and even your limbs, or life. TWO hands on the wheel are safer than one. But if you are only into Sunday drives to the church and brunches...the manual will be PURRFECT for you. \"/

    Re: Manual Vs R-Tronic

lot's of threads on this one if you search the site.

the r-tronic feels a lot like the m6's single clutch smg III. bear in mind the smg was slated by the journalists too - they really don't seem to get single clutch automated manuals for some reason expecting them to feel like slush-box autos or, more lately, comparing them to dual clutch setups. If you liked smg I can't see why you won't like the r-tronic. Like the smg, the auto mode is a bonus rather than the point of the transmission.

the main differences are the choice of 2 settings (normal/sport) vs the 6 on the smg and the way the r-tronic automatically goes to neutral after a few seconds of no gas/brake pedal whilst stationary, requiring first to be reselected manually.

I guess I am going to have to try them both out. The car is going to sit in Downtown Chicago and I am going to use it as a daily driver - year round.

Absolutely no complaints with the Rtronic. Use it as I would a manual but no clutch. Even the wife drives it smoothly. With the latest software updates normal mode is smoother and sports mode is more aggressive.PERFETCT...
I never use the auto mode.......

oh snap. look who's here. club 411. I am Hovy on l4p.

you'll and your gf will perfectly be fine with the r-tronic. i had it and it was great.

as a matter of fact. i am getting another R8 and it will also be r-tronic. until DSG becomes available that is.

forget there is an "A". drive it in sequential, that's it.

I had the chance to get #2 on list at an audi dealer after the client canceled his spot. Mine was fully loaded with convenience pack, extended leather, cf interior and engine and alcantara headliner.

Convenience package is a must. (99% of the R8 have it)

    Gives you:

    - parking sensors
    - back up camera
    - bang & olufsen sound system
    - hill assist
    - storage

    The rest is aesthetics:

    - extended leather package
    - cf interior
    - cf compartments on engine
    - alcantara headliner

Depends how much of a car nuts you are.

    Good luck.

    Re: Manual Vs R-Tronic

Personally, I prefer a manual shift (stick!) and the fact that my Wife wont drive it because its a manual is a big plus for me!! and more than enough reason to go that direction, not to mention the cost difference! choices choices....
