    R-tronic vs. Lamborghini E-gear Transmission

I know Audi has a vested interest in Lamborghini and many parts are shared. Do the R-tronic and E-gear transmissions have anything in common besides being manual, single-clutch transmissions with an automatic mode? Clutch life for the Lambo E-gear can be pretty short depending in how it is driven. Can the R-tronic be expected to exhibit a similar clutch life?

Re: R-tronic vs. Lamborghini E-gear Transmission

they're the same unit - the r-tronic is actually stamped with the lambo logo.

as for clutch life, there have been quite a few threads on it eg:

Interesting Conversation with Senior Audi Tech re R8

there was a lot of assumption early on about the r-tronic given its lambo roots and the early e-gear clutch life, but there are a lot of r-tronics out there with decent mileage on their first clutch. Have to bear in mind the r8 is putting down a lot less power than the lambo and the software has improved over the years.

obviously none of that allows it to defy physics if the car is driven at the extreme.

added: finally found the picture of the transmission showing the logo (above the audi rings):

Re: R-tronic vs. Lamborghini E-gear Transmission

Not that I'm jumping ship but, I've been researching the Gallardo (2006+) and a clutch can run about $5K-$8K, depending on where you get it done. Most late model cars are selling with about 5K-10k on the clock are reported to have about 50-60% clutch life remaining. This appears to be one of the primary reasons owners are selling, they don't want to shell out the $$. Some offer a recent clutch reading in mm (?). Can a similar reading be obtained from the R-tronic? Just curious to know if any R-tronic owners have had the clutch done and how much it was. I mean, I would consider a late model R8 V10 R-tronic too.

People have posted before about being able to get the clutch wear info when the dealers hook up the car to their diagnostics.

Good to know. Browsing the R-tronics for sale, none report % clutch remaining or the reading. Sounds like it may be less of an issue with Audi but it would still be good to know before a used purchase. Thanks!

Too bad we can't check via the internet. General Motors offers me this on my Hummer. Monthly updates tell me my driving style, remaining oil life, equipment systems check, etc.

I think the real giveaway is the lack of posts bemoaning having to replace the clutch, especially given the length of time the car has been out and how many people are piling on the miles with it being a daily driver.

can't say I'm a fan of that level of data acquisition/retention - but it'd be good to be able to do a quick and easy lookup myself.

What is that black goo on the end of the 'box? Last ditch crash padding? or some kind of sound deadening?

Ian, that is black wrinkle finish paint. On some Gallardos this section of trans is exposed.
