About a week ago, my parents visited -- always a pleasure. My dad has always liked driving and has had some nice cars over the years (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc.). On this trip we had time for him to drive the R8. Watching him revel in the car, enjoying the power and handling, was great.
Last week, my son and I attended a young driver car control clinic (http://www.carcontrol.com/ -- highly recommended for new drivers). He still has his learner's permit and hasn't wanted to drive the R8 for fear of damaging it. After the car control clinic, he felt that he could handle a quick errand with me. He's been learning to drive in a 2009 VW Jetta Wagon with the 2.0 turbo -- a nice car with a nice engine for sure, but he never imagined the power of the R8. He ran it in full auto and gently accelerated from the several stops on the couple of mile run. He came out grinning ear to ear.
I share this because it's easy to take for granted just how special the R8 is. Every now and then it's worth sharing with someone new, if for no other reason than to recapture that sense of awe we all felt our first time behind the wheel.
