    R8 Depreciation?

    Hi Everyone,

I am hoping to get my hands on an R8 in about 2-3 years, and was wondering what you think pricing will be.

This is my first high-end car, so my experience with depreciation is lacking compared to most of you who seem to have had some other high-end vehicles at one point, or currently own more than one.

I was looking to get my feet wet with a 2002-2003 Porsche (996) 911TT, but my wife hates the look of the Porsche, and LOVES the look of the R8, so I guess I will save up for that.

I am thinking in 2-3years that pricing would probably be somewhere around 75-85K on average... sound reasonable (2008 models)?

Oh, and I will search for this, but does anyone know if US Audi car warranties are honoured in Canada? Obviously buying a 2008 in 2-3yrs this is not much of a concern.

    Thanks!
    John

I wouldn't worry too much about something that's going to happen in 2-3 years and I'd get a used R8 in Canada instead of importing one from the US. Based on friend's experience, it's hell and not worth it. Good luck.

I wont have the funds for 2-3yrs to purchase the car. I am looking to buy it cash, and in the US. Importing from the USA isnt tough, and you can save a ton of money when the dollar is good (ie now). I know lots who have imported cars, and its not tough.

Heck if I could find one within a 8-10hour drive, I could fly down, and drive it home.

There will be tons of R8s by then, i wouldn't worry. Can't comment on the US-CAN dollar in 2-3 years but like always it will 1:1 again.

to be honest, it wasn't hell importing the vehicle. If you can find one close enough to the border, it was pretty simple. And I really enjoyed the drive back

Yeah... a nice long trip home in your new car, and new scenery... perfect!

So, anyone have predictions on price in a couple years. I am assuming 80K is a solid bet, with 5K as a rough buffer either way

I really hope the R8 holds it's value well. There really aren't that many being built, so many of us with an R8 now are counting on it to hold up.

Sorry...but please guys, don't sell your R8s! That will help keep the prices up on re-sales well down the road when "version 2" debuts. (You know, the one with the 600HP V10 and the dual clutch tranny!)

You're probably going to be able to do better than that because there will be so many more by then. The production over-demand has already been met. This is why you are seeing new cars on the lot and an increasing number of pre-owned R8s for sale.

Keep your eye on all the usual places; Autotrader, Cars.com & eBay. As much as it pains us, 2008s with some miles on them are going for $90-100K right now and low mileage 2008 examples seem to be coming in at about $100-110K - both with a current factory warranty. Consider a CPO car with the 100K mile warranty to minimize unexpected expenses, which can get quite significant in the R8.

I am not only from Germany but also firm with some internal AUDI facts

So I can tell you that there will be probably a small facelift in model year 2012, but only really minor features. It's not even decided whether there will be any upgrades in hp for the two engines at all.
Audi is thinking about an all new R8 version for model year 2014 but this has not been decided yet. Reason is that they are evaluating the recent sales.

In 2007 and 2008 somewhere between 11,000 and 12,000 units were sold. Production capacity is normally at 30 cars a day, at the beginning of 2009 they produced 1 car per day. In 2009 some 1,500 to 2,000 units were built and these have not all been sold yet (at least in Europe).

My personal opinion on this: the R8 is Audis top notch car and they won't let prices go down that much that anyone can afford a used one - this would damage the branding they achieved with the R8. So they will either continue producing low numbers (which would not be sufficient scale for a completely new R8) or they will stop production in a couple of years.
