    Thinking about an R8..Need help!

    Hey Everyone,

I've been a loyal bmw enthusiast for a long time but i have outgrown their model line up, I am seriously considering the V10 audi r8, I currently have an m6. I really enjoy my smg transmission, i took one on a short test drive but wanted to ask those long term owners how the smg reacts at low rpms and daily driving? I have seen jerky shifting notated in several review articles and was curious.

With that said, I loved the test drive i went on, i can't say im a fan of the wheel shape but im considering this or a porsche turbo s. I love the way the porsche drove but the interior was pretty bare.

a lot of reviewers slap it into auto and expect it to work like a normal slush-box auto rather than appreciating that the r-tronic is automating the same single clutch transmission as found in the stick-manual. I don't drive mine in auto at all, but if you search this site you'll see that people who do said the smoothness improved with the latest software update and there also seems to be a consensus that the v10 r-tronic "feels" better than the v8.

the biggest bugbear for me is that, unlike smg, the car goes to neutral after a few seconds of being stationary with no gas/brake pedal and requires the gear to be manually reselected (pull a paddle or nudge the stick) before moving off. easy enough once you get used to it though.

Simply keep your foot on the brake pedal when at a standstill, problem solved. It works for me.

The R-tronic is light years ahead of the SMG-II of my previous M3. I highly recommend it. I have not witnessed any problems with jerky shifting.

It also depends if you want to be another sheep and get a Porsche which are way too common now or get something which has people turning in the street as you drive past as happens with the R8.

I have the '06 M6 with SMG and if you program it in M mode with 5 bars...for rapid shifting...and NEVER use it in auto mode....it wasn't made for that....you will find it to be a very smooth shifting experience. The same with the '10 R8 V10....keep it in sport mode ALL the time and never use auto...and the experience is very very smooth and fast.
