Help anyone?? I Need short term auto insurance policy in Europe!

Hi all. I need to get an auto insurance policy to drive another person's car in Europe for ONE week. Does anyone know where such a policy can be obtained, or even if they exist?

    Thanks for the help.

    Steve

P.S. The car would be owned by someone from England, and I, a US citizen, would be driving it a few hours a day for a week....in Continental Europe only. (Just some more details.)

Surely Harrison can come to the rescue here as he is in the insurance game? Probably on one condition, Ian has to sport stickers on his R8 advertising Harrisons firm

Steve...contact Expedia.com and inquire about SECONDARY car insurance. Normally a persons' auto policy covers them in any vehicle they drive. Coverage outside of the U.S. is extra. Good luck!! You have presented me with a much different situation than I am used to. I own my own veh. that lives in Stuttgart. My freinds helped me get it insured the German way. C-YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA !!!!!!!!!! \"/

Thanks for the lead Harry. I'll look into secondary car insurance.

AAA uses MetLife and they do have a policy....but it is their GRAND coverage and includes everything I own....but it might work. I'm still looking into that....maybe changing from Allstate which doesn't seem to want to cover me overseas!

I would also ask Ian for his insurance companies contact info and talk to them, since they already have the vehicle insured. They may offer an additional rider or limited insurance.

Ian, if you are following this thread, would you be willing to send me, by E-mail, your insurance company info, and I'll contact them directly and see what they might offer to sell me directly??? Good suggestion SDR8. Thanks.

Steve: from my limited experience, that's probably the most likely route to pursue. When my Swedish friend was over here for a couple of months, my ins. co. added him onto my auto policy as an additional, designated driver (at very little cost) of my insured autos. And when I was in Sweden for 6 weeks recently, he added me as a "user" on his snowmobile policy (which was liability only).

But it's the liability (or "3rd party coverage) that is what is most important and, I think, absolutely required in most of Europe. I think every car in Europe carries one of those "green cards" that vouches for it's liability coverage across national boundaries. You used to have to produce it at the "douane/zoll" booth but now, with the advent of the EU, you just have to have it handy for the authorities should any "irregularity" occur.

Hope you don't have any "irregularities," but rather a fabulous trip!

Thanks Willy for the info. I'm not sure why Ian's company is giving him so much trouble??? I DO HAVE a large umbrella liability policy from Allstate which will cover me in Europe if something catastrophic happens that is my fault!!! Maybe carrying this with me is enough???? I can pay "damage to vehicle" costs out of pocket if I caused an accident!

But I won't spoil the trip.....I hope to drive some, but if I can't, I'll just get to enjoy the ride and the scenery!
