Cops Were Out To Get ME!!

Funny...personalized license plate related story!!
So you guys know I went with GR8TRYDE...(GR8RYDE (no "T") was already taken!)..
So the other day I was leaving a store ..and as I sighted my R8 I noticed a coupla cop cars not too far away...(I'm always nervous with COP cars ..'cause with no front license plate here in Ontario on my car(s) I'm flaunting the law!!)
So as I approach the car..the 2 cop cars (kinda) surround me and say..DID YOU KNOW THAT PLATE ISN'T REGISTERED TO THAT VEHICLE?!!!?
I'm mildly shocked (and amused!...I know I've done nothing wrong?! ..and they think there's some kinda MAJOR AUTO THEFT RING GOING ON!!!!!! LOL!!)..
Anyhoo..the cop turns the computer in my direction and shows me something and asks .."DO YOU KNOW SO & SO (who presumably the plate is registered to) ???!! and I say...No!! Who?!..
What plate are you checking??
At that point the cop realizes he's punched in the wrong plate number!! Sheepishly he says..." I forgot the "T" in GR8"T"RYDE!!!!!!!!!!!!
and I guess he'd called for Back-Up...cause he then called despatch to cancel
the call!!
He told me everything was FINE with my car!! (I guess he didn't notice the "missing" front plate!!!!!!! LOL!!)

isn't it kind of weird that they'd looked up your plate in the first place or is that just normal over there?

Actually ..we were wondering the same thing...don't they have to have probable cause or something..? ! (or have I been watching too much Law & Order?! LLOL!! )...?

nothing says that they can't run your plate, if it is stolen, then they have probable cause.
Now in Arizona....

in this case the car wasn't stolen, they just looked up the wrong tag - but even if the car was stolen, how would they know that before they looked it up?

looking up an r8 sounds more to me like they wanted to see who owned it for personal curiosity rather than any "probable cause".

Here in the US, looking up a plate for personal reasons can get the law officer in a rather big heap of trouble.

Proving that was the reason is a different story, however.

Well cops regularly run plates as far as I know. Heck some even have software that scan plates as they drive looking for cars that may be stolen, carrying fugitives etc.

in this case he may have checked it just for the heck of it, but even still, no harm no foul.

Right after I got my R8 back in January of 2008, I got pulled by two detectives in an unmarked car as I was coming off a freeway exit into downtown Chicago in very heavy rush-hour traffic. It took me a couple of blocks to move over to an outside lane so I could pull over . . . all the while wondering what I had done to get pulled. It turned out they just wanted to ask me about the car. Talk about mixed feelings.

Anyway, it left me a bit more patient with regular motorists taking pains to get a better look at the car.

I did soon form the habit of trying to stop for gas only when no other pumps were in use. There are only so many gas station conversations with strangers you want to have about one car.
