    R-Tronic vs 6 Speed

I have been back and forth between an 09 R8 and an 07 gallardo. I favor the R8 for reliability issues, as well as being able to service at my local Audi Dealer. I cannot seem to find which tranny performed better. I tried googling it, however no clear tests. On a 2009 R8 which tranny performes better? Is the R-Tronic reliable. I tend to drive very hard. This car is simply for fun, not a daily driver. Help appreciated

From this forums experience, the R-Tronic is reliable, it's 'just' the standard 6MT with a electro/hydraulic actuator so is not inherently that complicated. You should drive them both as they have different characters.... and you pay's your money and takes your choice...

For a fun car, I vote 6MT. For daily city driving or stop/go traffic, the R-Tronic is easier...

FWIW, even for daily driving and in traffic I really enjoy the 6MT. For the track, I'm sure the 6RT would be quite dandy!

V8 or V10? I heard there is a slight improvement in the V10. I also hear that the MT is better than the R-tronic in both cars. That's not to say the R-tronic is bad, but most people prefer the MT. You may or may not get a slightly faster lap times, and that may or may not simply be due to you skill, but I think the main difference is the interaction. I personally just like shifting a manual.

The R8 GT should get an even more improved R-tronic (perhaps LP560-like or even better,) but I don't think that will be seen on the other models.

However, if the R8 GT does get the same R-tronic as the other models, consider what that means. The GT will only be available with the R-tronic, and they certainly wouldn't put a lesser transmission in the highest-end model for no reason. Clearly R-tronic is good enough if not better in that case.

I like the R-tronic.....if it is used in Sport mode, the shift times are fast and smooth! But everyone is different. I prefer the automate clutch. Others rather do it manually. To each his own!

The GT supposedly has the "same" R-tronic as the V10. I think I read that the R-tronic on the rear wheel drive LMS Race version is the one than is "different". As usual, I could be wrong!

    Re: R-Tronic vs 6 Speed

I wrung my hands with indecision when I ordered my '08 R8 about which shifter to choose, especially as I was going to be driving in heavy commuter traffic. I finally opted for the 6MT, based on the press reviews of the two shifters at the time.

When I ordered my V10, I opted for the 6MT without a second thought. I've had all kinds of sports cars over the years, and I have never had so much fun with a manual shifter.

According to Steve Sutciffe of Autocar mag, the LMS has a manual clutch you need to use to get it going, so it's definitely different!! He was raving about how easy it was to drive fast...

I don't really get it Ian. Do you have to push a clutch to get into 1st, and then use the paddle shifting for the rest of the gear changes?

Is there a reverse! How do you get into it?

    Re: R-Tronic vs 6 Speed

I've grown to really like the Rtronic. A manual would be fun (miss the CLUNK of engagement), but it's a lot more carefree and once you get the hang of when and where to shift it's pretty good
